Steinhauer-effexor withdraw/binging

Posted by beppe on December 22, 2004, at 6:17:31

Hello! I am a recovering bulimic. I am currently weening myself off of the antidepressant effexor xr and for some reason i can not stop eatin. I will eat 3 sandwiches in a row when normally i could only eat one. i don't really feel full and then 15-20 minutes later i will eat alot again. I'm terrified that if i step on the scale i will resort to my old ways... any advise?

Dear Beppe,

It can be very tricky to discontinue Effexor. It is really important to do this under your doctor's supervision, as you must proceed slowly to avoid withdrawal side effects (typically nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness).

I'm not sure what to make of this bingeing; it is not something I've heard of before as a withdrawal effect of Effexor. However, I can imagine that if lowering your dose is either causing withdrawal side effects OR allowing for a resurgence of your previous anxiety or mood symptoms, that may well affect your eating. Best of luck, and please follow up with your own doctor. ES

Hi, I've read that when serotonin is low, it can make you want to eat, especially carbs. I too feel like I am eating to no end while tapering off effexor, but I feel full and keep eating! I keep reminding myself, or God does, that its just temporary, a moment in time. That helps me get through it. Renee
