How to increase my serotonin levels

Posted by Robert Fairburn on October 25, 2003, at 20:10:53

I have just recently had a serotonin blood test which showed that I had quite low levels in my blood.

The question that I am wondering is the blood test indicative of seratonin levels on my brain

Cheers Robert

Hi Robert,

I am not sure if blood tests are indicative of serotonin levels in your brain.

The amino acid 5HTP is one way to directly and naturally raise serotonin levels in the brain. It has been very effective for some people in treating depression and anxiety related to low serotonin levels. I can say that it definitely helps my depression (which I believe to be related to low serotonin levels) to an extent.

AD's also serve to increase serotonin levels by inhibiting the uptake of serotonin. Good luck

Hi I do not really know how to explain what I have I have been to several doctors and I have had blood tests cat scans, MRI's. One day while sitting on my couch about two years ago I felt as if I was almost falling out of my body and could not control it which started my heart pounding out of my chess I went to the emergency room and they just gave me fluids thinking I was dehydrated I have since the felt the same thing repeatedly every day I took other drug's for panic attacks but none seemed to work Ifelt like a lab rat with all of the drug's being offered for 4 months nothing worked my friends mom said she has panic attacks and explained some of the simulair effects and said she took xanax I got some from her and they worked I have been takeing them for over a year and a half I do not want to take drugs but I try to go all day and it is hard to control I feel dizzy,numb,hot/cold palputations cant think straight I really do not know what to do I dont see doctors any more it seems like I do more for myself it is so scary I would rather have a dog eat me alive than feel another panic attack not that I want a dog to eat me but trying to explain how scary this is.What advise can you give as to increase serotonin and can I get the amino acid from a drug store I ate vitamins but they increased my heart rate as well back to the xanax fixing everything I do not like them and want to do something about that.

I recently had a metabolic urine test done and the results showed very low levels of serotonin. My question is as above....does having low levels of serotonin in my body mean that the level of serotonin is low in my brain??? I do take 20mg Celexa daily and I understand that is a serotonin re-uptake inhibitor....but if my serotonin is low than the Celexa doesn't have much serotonin to work with, does it? Any input appreciated.

Karen
