What is the amount of DHA recommended for treatment of depression?

It's really individually based I think. Also, some do better with more EPA and some do better with more DHA in their diet. I think something like 400 to 800 mg of DHA would be a good range to experiment with when treating depression. If you don't respond well to high amounts of EPA, I would still add a little bit to the mix.

Thanks. It seems like DHA is getting more press in the treatment of depression. But I had no idea where to start.

Start with higher DHA first, give it a month or so, and then switch to higher EPA if it doesn't make a difference. Individual chemistry makes a difference so you may have to go through a few trials to find out what works for you. Some do best with amounts of EPA and DHA that are fairly close in amounts.

Thanks. I'm currently taking an EPA/DHA combo without much success. I'll try increasing to 800 mg DHA.

I seem to get help from about 400mg of DHA per day. I do like the effect of pure DHA vs. pure EPA.
Too much DHA makes me feel weird, it seem to distort my thinking.

Thanks. I've used EPA/DHA combo in the past with not much effect. Thinking maybe DHA alone and more of it might be helpful.

that is great to hear that DHA has benefits for depression as I thought the research out there said otherwise. My psychiatrist recommended for me to take 4 grams of EPA for depression and it has worked so well for me I actually, believe it or not, take 10 grams of EPA a day. Fantastic stuff.

And this one, in case you have allergies (Many in my family do) lists types of hypoallergenic brands, to look for http://itsnotmental.blogspot.com/2008/11/hard-to-find-but-commonly-needed.html
This is the end of the thread.
