Posted by qqqsimmons on November 20, 2008, at 14:41:15

does anybody know?

i have some tinnitus (ear ringing) that comes and goes. right now i feel my ear is plugged and i've got some balance problems due to the ear, and mild tinnitus.

these days i only take it in multivitamin form, though i used to be more careless with it...

The question is how much is too much? How much are you taking?

Zinc appears to have a positive effect on Tinnitus and hearing problems :

"Zinc (600 mg per day of the Zinc Sulfate form of Zinc) may alleviate some cases of Tinnitus"

Arda, H. N., et al. The role of zinc in the treatment of tinnitus. Otol Neurotol. 24(1):86-89, 2003.

Gersdorff, M., et al. [The zinc sulfate overload test in patients suffering from tinnitus associated with low serum zinc. Preliminary report]. Acta Otorhinolaryngol Belg. 41(3):498-505, 1987.

Ochi, K., et al. [The serum zinc level in patients with tinnitus and the effect of zinc treatment]. Nippon Jibiinkoka Gakkai Kaiho. 100(9):915-919, 1997.

Zinc is essential for proper ear function. Many tinnitus patients have been found to have low levels of zinc. Supplemental zinc alleviates (and sometimes totally cures) tinnitus in persons with low zinc levels).

·Segala, M. (editor). Disease Prevention and Treatment 3rd Edition. Life Extension Media. Florida, USA. 2000:675.

Some researchers have observed good results in tinnitus patients using 50 mg of zinc per day from zinc gluconate.

yeah, not a lot of zinc, maybe i'm just a freak who cannot handle the mineral.

maybe my pyrithone-zinc anti-dandruff shampoo is seeping into my brain.

anyway, the ear noise and zinc supps have always seemed related to me. of course, i use zinc to help me concentrate when i sit at the computer for, say, eight hours at a time.

maybe some day someone else will search this board for zinc and tinnitus and find out they aren't the only one with this problem...

like when i found others on this board who got insomnia from fish oil...

anyway, the tinnitus comes and goes, so it's more an annoying mystery than life-threatening disease...
