inositol? help!

Posted by g_g_g_unit on July 13, 2007, at 9:00:13

hi, was just curious because i'd read some great things about inositol's potential for helping panic/ocd here. i spoke to my naturopath today about it and she advised against using an isolated B, instead offering me a B complex since she said it's better to ensure that all areas are covered. I'm a little frustrated about how dismissive she was though this seems to be a case of me feeling obliged to trust an authority; I pay a lot to see her and assume she knows what she's doing. But might it be worth exploring Inositol's therapeutic properties on my own? and can it be taken in addition to the B complex, which i would assume carries a small amount of inositol anyway?

Hi I have some experience with Inositol. I took it for three months to treat panic attacks. Unfortunately it didn't work and if anything I felt a lot worse. It might well work for you so don't be disheartened. Have you tried Tryptophan or 5HTP?

Hi I've tried 5HTP but didn't stick with it, though it made me feel a little weird. Anyway I'm taking Remotiv, which is a high-grade brand of St John's Wort grown in Sweden. I just wanted a little something for energy since the Remotiv makes me tired, and since I'd heard about the inositol - OCD thing, it sounded worth trying, y'know killing two birds with one stone, etc. But what I'm asking is is Inositol isolated really different from just taking a B complex? should I trust my naturopath and go with the safe option, or is there a chance Inositol could do wonders?

also while i'm on the subject, can anyone tell me if they found they were really tired on St John's Wort? I took for about a week and stopped cos I only had a weeks worth and I've been given some more now and 2 days in I find I get really tired in the evening. could this effect clear just like SSRI sfx? even the B complex doesn't seem strong enough to counteract this sedation

Inositol is not a vitamin, although it is classified as a member of the B group of vitamins. The amount of Inositol used to therapeutic effect in studies was 12 to 18 grams, which is absolutely not a dosage you will find in any Vitamin B complex.

Indeed. I don't see why it wouldn't be worth taking both a B complex (I take a B-100) in addition to Inositol, which itself wouldn't generally be found in any B complexes.
