Rancid fish oil?

Posted by LizinManhattan on March 15, 2006, at 23:14:25

Hi,
How do you know if your fish oil is rancid? Is there any way to know? I keep my fish oil in the fridge, but how am I supposed to know how it was stored before I bought it? These are all of course rhetorical questions, but I'm hoping someone has some ideas about this. Is there fish oil powder or anything like that with which you wouldn't have to worry about rancidity?
Thanks,
Liz

I'd like to know the answer to this, too. I've heard that you need to buy from places with high turnover for one thing, and I've heard that any oil may be rancid "if it smells like oil paint". Yet, how can you tell this when there is that fish smell to deal with? I know all rancid oils are very, very bad for you- when in doubt- throw it out. They will hurt more than help-they are oxidized, they are like almost poison, it sounds.

The more they smell of fish, the more rancid they are.
