Hello.
In my experimentation with fish oil, I recently found a small bottle of wheat germ oil at the back of my cupboard (not too old either) and thought, as it is supposed to be a good natural source of vitamin E I would start taking it, as vit E capsules, *natural* or not, seem to exacerbate my acne.
Well it's been about 3 days on this stuff and my energy level has definitely gone up. Plus no acne outbreaks, and I'm wondering if the extra vitamin E isn't making the fish oil work better. Also I have had more energy in my tennis, although of course all this could be a number of things, not just the wheat germ oil.
Anyone else had good results with this? I read it's a good source of octacosanol, which is touted for energy production.

How much fish oil do you take? What is the breakdown? What brand has the highest amount per pill so I don't have to take like 10 a day? Are you familiar with Purity Products Omega 3 (they're sending me a free bottle to try)? They "claim" to have in just two softgels (500 mg DHA, 650 EPA), the Omega-3 power that you typically would find in 4 softgels in other brands.
I could use an energy boost. I'm taking so many supplements now, including fish oil (albeit only 1200/mg/day), but there are days I just feel awful, and some nights, especially after I eat, I have a general malaise and odd feelings. I just wish I could have several days in a row where I feel great.
I never see any mention of flaxseed oil. Anyone have any input on that as well?

Hi vitaqueen -
sorry to hear you're not feeling so great - hope things get better soon!
Ok, so I take different brands of fish oil. I think the cheapest I found was Dr Murray's Rx factors fish oil, which has 400mg EPA and 200mg DHA per cap. A close second is NOW double-concentrated caps with 360mg EPA and 240mg DHA. The brand I take with the most EPA is Source Naturals Arctic EPA which has 500mg EPA and 90mg DHA per cap. However this brand is pricey ($30 for 120 caps from betterlife.com).
I usually will take one high EPA cap and one of the others (think prefer Dr Murrays) 3 x daily. Occasionally, for some kind of weird intuitive feeling, I do take more - sometimes less, although not often less.
There are various theories floating around at present regarding fish oil and mood: one is that DHA-high fish oil makes mood worse - and that the quantity of DHA in the cap detracts from EPA's effects on mood - so therefore the more EPA and the less DHA the better. Also we are supposed to be able to make DHA out of EPA.
The other theory is that mass dosing is no better than taking a gram or so of EPA a day - and might even be less effective for depression etc.
So, as usual, trial and error is the way to go. I haven't noticed a lessening of effect with my dose, which was higher than originally - but then I might have been very deficient in omega 3 (was a vegan for months on end), and maybe I'm still playing catchup.
The one time I did try a brand of fish oil that had equal amounts of EPA/DHA, my symptoms seemed to come back within about a week (and I didn't know at the time the ratio in the pills I was taking so it wasn't psychosomatic (sp?).
I tried flax seed oil and it didn't feel very good with my system. I got quite hyper and irritable on it - and I need calming down, not hyping up most of the time.
I will say I go through cycles where my anxiety seems to come back for a day or two. This has happenend a lot with the fish oil. Overall I am very good now, but I still have days - and I have found taking a combination of EFAs helps to sort this out.
I take GLA pills on a semi-constant basis - (evening primrose oil/borage oil etc) which gets rid of anxiety for me just about immediately. I also take lecithin caps every day and find these very helpful for anxiety.
Dr Stoll seems to think it's important to be taking extra vitamin E and C when ingesting high amounts of fish oil so I try to do this. I don't take the amounts he recommends though (aka 800IUs vitamin E and 1.5g vit C) - 800IUs of vitamin E feels like too much to my body.
Hope that helps. I think there is some truth in the high EPA theory - at least it feels like that to me.

I started taking wheat germ oil after I read Loops' post. And for what it's worth my experience has been the same as Loops'. For the last few days since I've been taking a teaspoon or two of wheat germ oil, my energy level has increased but there has been no increase in anxiety. I take a teaspoon of wheat germ oil with a teaspoon of fish oil in tomato juice. An added benefit is that wheat germ oil masks the taste of fish oil really effectively!

is in one tablespoon of wheatgerm?
It must be this making the difference in energy.
Also, anyone know why people aren't just buying safflower oil instead of CLA? Is it because our bodies can't transform the linolenic acid into CLA? But instead we turn it into GLA?
Off subject, sorry.

Could you please tell me how much you are taking daily, and how you take it? Thanks.

I have a big bottle, and I take a couple of teaspoons a day, spread throughout the day.
Hope that helps

Thanks. Just curious, do you take it straight from the teaspoon, or do you mix it in with some other food? Thanks.

straight from the spoon - or I put it into a squeezy bottle and squeeze some out straight onto my tongue. Actually quite like the taste - but then I am also known to bite fish oil capsules because I like those too. You can buy wheat germ oil in capsules as well though if you don't like the taste. Or of course you can start eating lots of wheatgerm - but I like the oil because it gives more vitamin E as a concentrated form.

>Hi Buddhi,
Sorry I didn't notice your post earlier. The brand I take is Viobin, only because it happens to be the one a local health store sells. There may be better brands- I have not looked into it at all.

Hi -
I take the Viobin one too. I really like the taste - very nutty.
