I posted a thread recently on the meds board about having gone off Paxil. Since I've decided to swear off SSRIs permanently and I'm not thrilled with MAOIs or tricyclics either, I'm looking into alternative treatments.
I've read many good things about acetylcarnitine (also referred to in the literature as Acetyl L-carnitine, L-acetylcarnitine, and L-carnitine acetyl ester) and it sounds to me like it will fit the symptoms I have. (I was originally diagnosed with GAD, but I have a feeling that the root of all my particular evils might be ADHD and the GAD just came along for the ride during a period of intense stress.) While I am a bit of a worrier (anxiety), I don't feel that it is my primary symptom. I think the worst thing wrong with me is my inability to focus on just about anything for more than a few minutes running. I also tend toward irritability if I'm not really mindful of my own behavior. All of which makes me wonder whether I actually have ADHD. But I digress.
I mention all this because acetylcarnitine, from everything I've read, addresses the things that concern me most: attention span, concentration, maintaining a stable mood, avoiding irritability.
Has anyone tried it? What do you think? Any and all feedback appreciated!
