Not too long ago my parents discovered aquavit in an airline magazine and were intrigued (my mother's side is Norwegian). I'm reminded of the old saw about drinking 'for medicinal purposes'. Wasn't this actually the truth (in some cases at least) before the advent of big pharma medicine? In European countries what herbs found their way into alcohol to impart psychoactive medicinal affect?
