I Feel Picked On

Posted by Phillipa on October 23, 2008, at 11:50:25

Seriously I do feel picked on. First some people say I don't post useful info then I make the effort to learn to cut and past as don't know much about computers so do what I've seen others do and post what I hope is a useful article. And then copyrights are brought up on my article and further down the meds board I see a poster post two full articles with a URL and when clicked on it it said to copy is an infringement on copyright rules. And then last night another full article posted. So why is mine the only wrong ones. Is it just me and you don't like me to post? It's rather hurtful. Thanks for listening. Phillipa

Well my husband did the Url for me on the article I posted but the whole darn thing pops up so is it because I'm registered or did I mess up again my sincere apologies and I guess it can't be corrected. Guess I better not post any articles again if not banned. Love Phillipa @#@@##@#$$$% I really did try to do it the right way.

Hi Phillipa,
I'm sorry for what my post about copyrights contributed to your feeling picked on. I didn't intend that. And you're right, there are other posts on the boards that include full text of articles. My intention in posting what I did was not to be the "copyright police", so to speak. I don't have the interest, time, or authority to do that. Instead, I brought up this issue on that thread to highlight another reason for excerpting vs. posting full text, as that is a turn the discussion took.

Also, though no one gets "banned here", people do get blocked from posting from time to time--a semantic argument. Still, I do not believe you are in jeopardy of being blocked from posting, at least not due to this issue. Nor do I think anyone should receive any kind of admin. action for posting full-text vs. excerpting copyrighted materials. I believe it's up to the holder of the copyright to enforce. Though I can't know what Dr. Bob's intention in adding that blurb to the FAQ was, I interpreted it as information and guidelines, not one of the Babble "commandments".

Again, I'm sorry for hurting you by seeming to pick on you. I know that feels crappy.

GeeGee it's okay. I just thought that since so many others do it was okay and to be honest I am too lazy usually to sign up to read an article. Yes it's strange to me as if you google these post often show up on google. So I figured too that if google puts them out there for readers copy and paste them. Love Phillipa

Google itself isn't putting anything on Babble or other websites. Google is a search engine, which just goes out and 'finds' what you ask it to find, based on keywords you give it. It locates information others have placed on the Web, whether it's its "original" place, or copied once or many times to other places later.

Hope that helps a bit... :-)
