...I also started using Firefox a few weeks back, and when I got the message, it did let me install *whatever* plug-in(s) (can't recall), and all is well now...never see the yellow box any more.
Wonder why it would act differently for me? Perhaps being a dinosaur and running Windows 98 (QUIT laughing!) has something to do with it....?

I think that's right. QuickTime should do it:

>Unfortunately, that won't work with Firefox. I have no clue why! grrrr! I've been trying every way I can possibly think of to get it to work...from doing Firefox's automatic download to going straight to the quicktime site and downloading it. Doesn't work. I just gave up because I would never listen to the music anyways. It's just that stupid yellow box that bugs me.

I'm not too worried about the missing plugin though. There's no reason for me to have it anyways. I prefer to choose my own music.

> >I've tried all the steps that Mozilla support recommends for this problem, and I still get the "missing plug-in" message every time I come here and only here. It seems to have something to do with the music being embedded (I have no idea what this means, btw). I'm running Windows XP and the most current Firefox and Quicktime versions. I have my Quicktime set to run midi files, and it does on all the test pages I tried.
This doesn't affect my ability to use this site, but like thuso, I really hate that yellow error banner at the top of my screen. If I take the time to close it, it helps, but it pops up each time I go to a new board. Grrrrr!
Any chance you can do the music script (is that what it's called?) differently? And are you by any chance using bgsound? Apparently that's not compatible with Firefox, though there is a plug-in that is supposed to correct that. I haven't been able to download that plug-in, though. (stupid dial-up!)
So anywhoo, here's the page with all the info I was using to try to correct this, if anyone else wants to try.
Good luck,
gg

Bah. That actually gives a pop up window that I have to close to continue. Bah!
I can't remember if that's why I switched to using Firefox for Babble. Too long ago.

If you have successfully installed and setup Quicktime and passed the above test, you may still run into a problem with embedded media on some pages or your own page for that matter. The most common reason is that the page in question is using the non-standard <bgsound> element to embed audio. Firefox does not support the bgsound element. If this is the case, there is an extension available which enables Firefox to play audio embedded with the bgsound element:
BGM ConductorApparently it's bgsound that it doesn't support, though if I could get that BGM Conductor it might help. I didn't have any luck with that last night and haven't had time to try it tonight. I still don't know why I can't seem to get the Quicktime plug-in for MIDI files. Everything else seems to work just fine.
Strange.

Ah, I think they're using "embed" in a generic way. Try this:

I thought there was just one plug-in that handled multiple types of files?

There are multiple plugins.
See: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=206210&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=#test
In particular, try launching "about:plugins" (no quotes) from Firefox. When I try that, it shows the installed plugins on my PC. None that I have support MIDI. Yours may look different from mine. Mine lists eight files.File name: npqtplugin8.dll
File name: npqtplugin7.dll
File name: npqtplugin6.dll
File name: npqtplugin5.dll
File name: npqtplugin4.dll
File name: npqtplugin3.dll
File name: npqtplugin2.dll
File name: npqtplugin.dllAlso, I tried the test here, and firefox still could not locate and could not download the appropriate plugin.
Between this and my new PDA losing sound...Grrrr. This is what I get for trying to solve this stuff on my own instead of asking (yet again) my in-house tech support (aka my husband).
Thanks,
gg

Ah, I see, it's different with Windows. What you get is different than what they show, you don't have "MIDI file" listed? And you made those "minor adjustments in the Quicktime Control Panel"?

OK, how about:

Also, what do you get when you click "check browser"? Thanks for your patience,

I'm following along. You weren't able to configure the QT midi files?

I add MIDI files, but they just don't show up. When I go to test sites, the MIDI file examples aren't clickable in some cases. I feel like giving my ol' computer a swat upside the "head". ;)

That makes it sound like the problem's on your end...

That's weird. I don't have it any more.
I use firefox and if the plugin was the box at the top of the page saying a plugin wasn't installed, for some reason I've gotten rid of it.
I tried this before and it didn't work, so maybe Bob did something? I don't know.
But this morning I reinstalled QT alternative and the message at the top of the page has disappeared.
Hope this holds up.

Apparently there's a Quicktime alternative available that might help me with this issue. When I get time, I'll try installing that and see what happens.

That's the one that I used, gg.
I thought I had also tried in the past-- but maybe Firefox has changed it.
Since it worked this time for me, it could very well work for you.

It's good to hear it's worked well for you. I've been trying to download it, but every link I try winds up with corrupt files and won't install. It could be my computer, I don't know. But if you still have the link form your download, I'd be grateful if you posted it or babblemailed it to me.
Thanks.

Hi, gg.I'm not sure where I got it, but Mozilla sends you to this site to download it--so I assume this is where I did it. Let me know if it works for you.
