Dr. Bob and The Server

Posted by Phillipa on December 12, 2006, at 21:34:44

Dr. Bob, gg, Clear Skies want to thank-you for your prompt response when I e-mailed you the server was down. But maybe a new server Dr.Bob. I was getting e-mails right and left from people from England asking if the site was down here. Could you maybe get on them a bit? Very annoying if you schedule your time. And I know I not the only one who has things to do. Not trying to sound selfish. Just concerned. Love Phillipa

Do you have ~any~ idea how much a new server costs? About 4 - 5 months salary for me, and I am on an above average wage.. and thats not for a particularly great one.

If we paid for this site, I think we would have more comeback to complain about its speed of loading. And yeah, it is frustrating at the moment.. but, its something I am learning to work around..

And, in all honesty, it adds maybe 5 minutes to my day (which is very busy by the way. I am out at work a minimum of 12 hours including travelling time, so my tme is pretty limited).. and 5 minutes isn't all that much of a problem.

The server wasnt' simply slow yesterday, though. I couldn't get onto this site for large parts of the day.

The result is that no one is here, and then even if you do finally get on, it's pretty empty.

I might take me two or three presses of the refresh button, but at no point recently have I been completely unable to connect..

maybe try hitting re-fresh (DON'T hold the ctrl button down while doing so though) if you can't get in..

I do know how frustrating it is, but I also know how damned expensive this place is for Dr Bob to run, and how alot of it is probably out of Bob control (I'm pretty sure he doesn't host it himself.. Not sure who does).

But then, I am one of those who is simply very very grateful to Dr Bob for providing this place, and providng both his time and money to keep it here.

I thought it was just me. I had this same problem yesterday and was completely unable to get on the site almost the entire day, even with refreshing the page many times, etc. It either timed out or came up saying "page not found".

Nikki, I also am very thankful to Dr Bob for having this site available to us. I certainly dont expect it to be perfect. There are some things that I do wish were different but knowing that this isnt Bob's full time job and he isnt being paid to do it keeps me from complaining. I also dont mind waiting for it to load for a few minutes if necessary. Not being able to get on however is a problem (if its recurrent anyway). I dont know what the solution is though.

Thank you dr bob you everything you do here. This isnt meant to be a criticism.

The server was down from around 8am til late afternoon. Then it came on then crashed again thankfully not long. But there was absoluter no way to connect. A page came up saying server down. I e-mailed Dr. Bob and deputies and they very graciously informed me the server was down. I even had people e-mail from England asking if it was off in the US as well. Love Phillipa

I agree with some others who have posted. It's not my site, so I don't really feel like I should complain about things like the server. Something like that is pretty much out of Dr. Bob's control too, I think. And I read PBabble when I get up in the morning, but if I don't get to read it that day, I just check later, or I can catch up another day. If it's not working I try to take it in stride.

I didn't think of my message as a complaint.

I know, though, that some people depend on this site for company or responses during the day. So I also can imagine that it's disappointing or even distressing when it either isn't loading (which happened yesterday, but also more often than desirable lately, although for shorter periods) or is extremely slow. On some days recently, it's taken more than a minute to load each time I opened anything, which can make reading threads quite difficult.

On the other hand, one other day, there were hours during which the site timed out repeatedly after 20 seconds on my browser. I don't remember how many times I reloaded-- but it was quite a few.

I have no idea what the problem is, or whether (or how) to fix it.

I only meant to point out that it is a real problem. It definitely affects each of us differently depending on our patterns of use, and our needs at any moment-- as sunnydays points out.

I hope it goes without saying (although I'm happy to say it) that I'm very appreciative of Bob's willingness to maintain this place.

Unfortunately I'm a creature of habit. And I'm in the process of restructuring my life. So it is extremely annoying to me makes me angry even. I do know it's not Dr. Bob's or the deputies fault. Tough to be addicted to babble. So it must be a great site. Love Phillipa

Just wanted to make clear, I in no way intended to imply that anyone on this thread was complaining. It was a bad choice of words on my part, I think. I should stay off admin when I am upset for other reasons. I don't think clearly enough. That really truly was not my intention.

We know a place is operating well when poor response time or a crash is actually unusual! I'll bet we are both familiar with sites where that is de rigeur!

Funny how people never notice UP time!! (like when driving, we curse out red lights, but we sail through green lights without a thank you!)

sunnydays, I wasn't thinking mostly of your words.

It was more of a general sense that my comments were being seen as such, when I meant them more in the sense that I understand how Phillipa feels.

It reminds me of a time when my upstairs neighbor was knocking frantically on my door in the middle of the night because his cable had gone out. (Where I live you can't get any TV without a cable hookup.) He insisted I look somewhere in hopes that something in my apartment had affected his cable. Seemed quite mad to me. I didn't have a TV at the time-- so I thought his ravings were more than a little over the top.

At this point, if I lost my cable or internet connections, I'd be ranting as hysterically as he was.

So it all depends on what you rely on at any particular to create a sense of connection. If you do depend on this place to have a sense of stable environment, it's disruptive when it goes down.

That's obviously a testimony to how important these connections, and the presence of other people can be. Probably, for whatever reason, NikkiT2 or Emme don't rely on it at this point, in that way-- so they don't identify with the sense of its suddenly disappearing. Perfectly understandable. I wanted Phillipa to know that I did connect to her feeling.

You're right. I am no longer a babble addict. But I've been around a long enough to rememeber the outrage when Bob suggested people pay a membership fee - and recently when he added teeeny little ads. How is he supposed to pay for a server upgrade? Maybe he should sell mugs and t-shirts like DocJohn! (they're pretty cute)

Addictions are expensive! You should see my liquor store bill.

BTW, another t-shirt company's been recommended to me. Could we come up with something cute, too?

Honore what you said about me was absolutely correct. I really wish I was out working being productive, my self esteem is nowhere and I've about given up on ever being me again. When I come to babble sometimes I feel like nurse again. I feel like l'm part of something and there are others like me. However I become acutely aware that I should be working. But please don't go anywhere. I also have separation anxiety. Love Phillipa ps Dr. Bob I know it's not your fault the server and my panic. You do a great job.

I was actually happy to pay to be a member of this site.. I do it for other sites.

One site I use, and have done for around 10 years, non-members are free to use, but members get benefits.. such as the ability to set up their own rooms / boards, and set access to them in different ways (members only, passworded, totally public etc). I aso pay to be a member of flickr, because there, people can use it for free, but paying members get benefits.

That kind of scheme I am more than in favour of..

Try Canada and the fight against a two tier health system.
Its a tough call.
You want inclusiveness for all to healthcare, but there's not enough money....
So those who can rustle up enough money to pay, can get care sooner than others.
So that seems intrinsicly unfair. However, since when has life been fair?
And at least the waitlist for healthcare services will be shortened if the rich go to private clinics.
So the less well off, won't have to wait as long...
The poor can choose to sell what they have in order to get faster care.
So there you have it.
So w/babble, I hate to have private boards and stuff, cuz then the 'real' babble is hidden from those who could benefit from it. I would most likely have not stopped at this site if I would have seen that I had to pay money for full services, but then thats just me. Now that I been here, I would not mind a sign up fee.....
I guess w/tshirts and stuff, then its not two tier so much. Those who can afford shirts etc can buy them. It might be kinda fun to see other babbleshirts around!LOL. So I suppose it could be a bonding experince or something....
Now if we could agree on a shirt design...thats a whole NEW can'o'worms!!!
Hmmmmmm.

I hope the Tshirts don't say anything like: "Hi, I want to talk about my medication". They would have to be a little subtle.

I don't know, we could have t-shirts for each of the babble boards:

I want to talk about my medications

I want to talk about my therapy

I want to talk about the civility policies

I want to talk about alternative therapies

etc...

Would something like "I babble" on the front of the shirt be something anyone would like? I was thinking it was subtle enough, and could be funny.

Oooo...sunny, I like that!!

My first thought was, Civility Rocks

or better yet...Civility Rules......get it? ;-)

I can see 'I Babble' on the front....Where Civility Rules on the back?

But that's just dorky me.....IRL, too, I'm afraid. Then again, two T's said I was/am quite a rebel.....hmmm, so, do I love rules, or love breaking them?......arggghhhhhh identity crisis! lol

Back to better shirt ideas.....
