Hi, everyone,
I hear there's some unhappiness about, in addition to everything else, the civility section of the FAQ, in particular, the Potter Stewart quote ("I know it when I see it") and my civility theory.
I apologize if I hurt anyone's feelings. I've deleted the theory.
Regarding the quote, I do *not* mean that I have any special gift for discerning the "true" degree of civility of anyone's comments. What I do mean is:
1. I can't spell it out any better. Maybe more precise than "I know it when I see it" would be "not until I see it can I know it".
2. It's subjective. I may think I know it when I see it, but others may think they know it when they see it, too -- and we may disagree. So maybe even more precise would be "not until I see it can I form an opinion about it".
This isn't always easy, and I know I'm not perfect. I want to be open to feedback, but if you could also please try to accept what I decide and to trust that I'm doing my best to be fair and to do what I think will be good for this community as a whole, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
Bob

Dr. Bob,
Before I saw your post, I was thinking about how you are second guessed on almost everything you do. We can all sit back and be critics but I think you are as fair as anyone can be.
You've kept babbleland a pretty safe place.Would anyone else like to try 6 months of making these calls?
Not I.

I haven't been here for awhile, but I'm VERY crunched for time right now....The semester ends on the 8th and I'm behind on homework...it has nothing to do with anything that's gone on here lately, I just wanted you to know that...
There are times I may post a question about how you've dealt with something-why 1 person vs. another was blocked, PBC'd or whatever, but I'm not trying to give you a hard time..only trying to get a better understanding of how you perceive things.
I do think that if you laid it out better in the FAQ that maybe it wouldn't cause such an uproar at times. Put it into the FAQ about doubling the length of time a person is blocked after they've been blocked once (you may have done this already), etc. Add a section of what will get you blocked, PBC'd, how many before there's a block..it's really difficult sometimes, because it looks as if some people may 'get away' with some things, whereas others are PBC'd or blocked for what seems the same offense.
Make the FAQ more prominent...make it easier to access or whatever..letting people know about it...more than on the main pages. Perhaps add a thread to the top of the each of page.
Just tossing out ideas. I know your job is a difficult one, and one that takes a lot of time, I guess the main thing is that it seems inconsistent (sp?) sometimes and that makes people wonder what they can say and what they can't.
Thanks for posting the apology, it shows you don't think you're above it because it's your site...hope that makes sense. I do appreciate what you do here. More than likely I'd never have met the wonderful people that I now call friends.
Thanks-Kiddo

you can see old editions of babble things that might have been deleted (it happens more than some might suspect for reasons about which i will not speculate )
the feb 21 2002 archive was there
i enjoy history
how does the way back machine decide how often and which editions to archive anyhow?
This is the end of the thread.
