DNPs

Posted by Declan on June 20, 2006, at 5:53:28

DNPs are more trouble than they are worth, and might just create a pretext for rule infringement. What's the point of them? If you don't like someone's posts (as you will) you can always ignore them.

The aftermath of the DNP's, at times, creates further problems than the original reason for the DNP. I wonder what that means about the rule itself?

I can't think of a siuation in adult life where the DNP would exist, only from my childhood. Surely there could be a software feature that would remedy the situation better, like an ignore button or something.

Ignore only lets you not see what the person may be saying. Which isn't the same thing at all.

I see the reason for the rule, and I think it can be great for cooling off as well as other reasons.

But I do agree with Lar the rule should be clarified and the details posted in the FAQ.

i still like an ignore button..lol (nm)

The current rule is about harassment, I thought at the end of the day if you feel you're being harassed by someone on a message baord, then the best thing would be not to feel harassed and therefore if you could remove posts from the person harassing - problem solved. For example if I feel harassed by junk mail in regular post, I don't want to see the post arriving on my door mat. Perhaps not in this case then?

That would be great to know. Its hard following a rule when you don't know you've broken it or what its about. Imagine the rule was a law in real life - people ending up being in trouble with the police for things they didn't know were crimes! (extream example lol :)

>I think it can be great for cooling off

I just switch off the computer :-)

I think the original rule has been expanded from harassment only.

One nice thing about DNP's is that they also prevent the requester from posting to the requestee. So it works both ways. That's why it's a good cooling off device.

It definitely has flaws though. And I think as part of the nature of the beast they aren't really correctable.

I am blue in the face from asking for that. I could show you a dozen separate attempts to have that implemented. Bob's most on point answer he ever gave me is that the code would be hard to write.

They seem to be common practice on alot of other forums when I just did a quick search....up-dating the FAQ could be easy;

"Find a post by the person you wish to ignore.
Click on their user name.
Click on "View public profile"
Just above where it says "contact info", there is a section that says add [user name] to ignore list.
Click that."

Or something along those lines (I took that from another site.)

They seem quite popular. (hope the messages are civil, its more about the ignore feature)

Seems it can be tricky on some forums, but still, anything is possible with I.T these days I would of thought an ignore feature could be made on here. Then again I know little about I.T.
