How many people will follow this thread to that board?

I for one generally stick to only a few boards...

I can't speak for others, but when threads get moved I tend to lose interest. Maybe that's just me.

Being given a link doesn't seem to help. Because I tend to look for new posts to threads I have been following.

Just wonder if others feel the same way.

Moving a thread is a pretty good guarantee that I won't follow it to the new destination.
The exception seems to be discussions that get redirected to the Admin board.

I agree, me three

Since I am only on social for now, and only once a week if I am lucky, I cannot follow threads to another board.

I remember from my previous babble days though, that I would not follow a thread once it was moved, including my own.

That doesn't seem to be the problem.
It's more like, who wants to have to move to another, maybe unfamiliar room, to continue a conversation? We were all comfy with our feet on the sofas where we were.
Or something like that.

Exactly.

I find most of the re-directs feel like a rude interruption of conversation. ( I know it's not intended to be rude, that's the real-live comparison of how it feels though)
Especially on Social which I had thought was sort of a catch all..
I especially hate it when someone is grieving and they get told that they've been re-directed to the grief board. I think some things should be sacred.

I agree also. And usually the fact that you have to post something else to be given notification of other responses. Sometimes i have nothing to add at the moment. It seems silly to me to have to post something just to continue to follow the Thread. And that's why they die out. Fondly, Phillipa

Yeah, I feel that social should be for everything. I mean, I understand telling someone they might better benifit by posting on a different board, but why take the whole thread away? Not to criticize the way things are being done at all. I understand the reasoning and am grateful that someone cares enough to try to keep things organized. I just think it's something that may want to be reconsidered.

It's a matter of not having to. Why do I have to follow a link for a thread that was moved to another board when it was about a movie for Crist's sake. Does every thread have to be specifically placed in their respective places? I agree that there are better places for certain subjects, but this one was pretty generic and generally social.

It's sorta like a chat room. General chat rooms have more people to talk to. Specific ones, like entertainment or books or movies, rarely have very many individuals to talk to. In my experience that is.

Yeah, it's rare enough to get a nice conversation going, and then when it get's redirected.. (med redirects I understand) on a technicality.. it just seems like "WTF?"
What harm could it do TO LET PEOPLE Talk about a movie ON SOCIAL.. I mean pullllllllleeze.
Once they rhythm is broken it just dies, that's what happens in any conversation.

Anyway, it's one of the reasons I barely post here anymore.

> Why do I have to follow a link for a thread that was moved to another board when it was about a movie for Crist's sake.

Well, you are free to choose not to follow redirects that is true.

I think the idea is that people do search the boards looking to join up for different things.

Some people might be interested to discuss movies or books but not interested in social because there are too many posters here or whatever.

I think it is a nice idea to have them arranged according to topic.

Where social is more of a catch all for whatever is left

> It's sorta like a chat room. General chat rooms have more people to talk to. Specific ones, like entertainment or books or movies, rarely have very many individuals to talk to. In my experience that is.

Yeah. I guess redirecting threads does tend to kill the thread rather...
But then that is only true because people don't follow the redirect.

I think that what is nice about the smaller, more specific boards is that there are fewer posters to them.

It can feel like more of a cozy group...

I think we all participate here to the exent of our individual time available and comfort level and within the set up of the boards.

Apparently it's not.

Yes, Phillipa also mentioned how this aspect of the system creates a problem.

Looks like some do.

Sounds like a good topic for admin, no?

If it goes to admin I won't follow it.

It would be just another case of beating a dead horse for me. As this thread is becoming.

What's different about admin and med threads?

Finally - an easy question to answer! Admin redirects are about board policy and ways to make this an even better place. There can be quite a bit of discussion and sometimes, resolution.

Med redirects are just putting the thread subject in the correct place.
Whew!

Sorry :-) but what I meant was, why is it OK to redirect admin and med threads and not other threads?

Well, people understand that med topics should stay together for the benefit of all, and lots of folks would rather administrative stuff be out of their way.

But if someone is (socially) talking about a movie and it gets moved it seems to get disrupted. And if a person posts on social (where they know their friends will be) about grieving - well, it's just a bad time to be moving anything.

Maybe the difference is that meds and admin have such a 'hard and fast' definition and the others can be more of a fuzzy delineation. Movies are social, right?

I tend to agree, although this is what I based my decision to move it on (from the Books board): This is a message board for mutual support and education. It focuses on books -- and stories, poetry, etc. -- that people have read, are reading, and want to read. And movies and I guess plays, too.

I gotta admit that unless someone is clearly looking for answers, and would best be redirected to the board where the most people familiar with the question can see and respond, or unless something is both administrative and has the potential to be upsetting or volatile, I am not a huge fan of the redirect.

But....

On the other hand, some of the smaller boards need a bit of a boost by getting more posts, and could potentially be helpful to a lot of people if they ever gain significant momentum. So in those cases I *am* a big fan of the redirect.

Nothing like having a firm opinion. :)
