to post a "please review this post, Dr. Bob" on admin, and just link the URL, without saying anything further, or characterizing the post in any sort of negative way.

okay that makes sense thanks Dinah..... (nm)

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/admin/20040527/msgs/359028.html

> So, Dr. Bob, do you really read every post and is it actually you when a reply says Dr. Bob?

It's actually me. I try to take a look at every post eventually, but because so many messages are posted, every line of every message cannot be screened.

> If someone posts an inaccurate statement such as, "Xanax killed 1.3 million Americans last year," can another individual challenge the vericity of such a statement without being considered uncivil? Certainly calling the poster a liar is unacceptible, but what about saying that I believe the statement to be false? Can an individual question the source of a posted statement attributed to another person?

Sure, accuracy is important. Disagreement isn't necessarily uncivil.

> Also, how does one remark about an offensive statement - I think I have discovered that saying something is offenseve is considered uncivil, so, is it acceptible to say "I find this statement to be offensive to me?"

It would be more of an I-statement to say "I feel offended by this statement". See also the earlier posts in this thread...

Fair enough. I have to assume that you detected some veiled hostility in my statements that justified a block. I suppose I would have to admit that it was there. I suppose with time I will learn how contributors acceptably express their feelings of anger, disappointment, disgust, distrust, and frustration at others here.

Parenthetically, speaking of assumptions, you may be interested in knowing that your assumption that oJacob was me was incorrect (resulting in an additional block). That was my 22 year old son. I confess that I asked him to look at the thread, but it was he who signed up to comment and his words.

The above whining aside, I appreciate the difficulty in hosting a site that strives to be safe, supportive and open - free of hostility, predjudice and disruption. That you administer it yourself is an impressive commitment.

This has come up before, I think I need to add something to the FAQ...

I can't think of a reliable way to differentiate between one person and two, so I've been assuming the former. But of course it may not be. So I think I'm going to ask explicitly that people not use the same computer to post.

What about a one computer house hold?? If my husband were to suffer mental illness, I would encourage him to post here, but because we connect to the internet via a router, event hough we have seperate PC's, you would only see the IP of our router.. so we would be posting with the same IP.

my situation too having had to use housemate's computer or library while mine was dead. now that I'm back up on computer it is still under the router network here so I'm guessing what Nikki said holds true for my case.

'cept housemate isn't hubby (lol) and I'm not aware of his mental health so do not know if he would ever find this site but like Nikki if he were ill I would encourage him in every way to find support that fits him.

I think you'll lose out on all that healthy to disagree stuff if you limit one pc/networked routered households to only one user. From my observation I've seen that people related and unrelated share computers or networking within households. It is a fact of modern life. We all cannot afford our own separate ISP accounts as the cost of that nears rx meds. You might lose out on a lot of good shtuff by limiting your input.

What about library / net cafe users though??

Say, Noa, goes to a library to check into PB while her PC is broken, but its the same library, say, that Dinah, has been to earlier, do they both get blocked??

Well, I'm not sure exactly how various scenarios should be handled... At least don't offer to let someone else post using the same computer?

Not to abuse an expired equine, but my son posted from a PC at home in Illinois, I post from my PC at work in Wisconsin. I'm not sure how the two were confused as one.

You could post to the board through a proxy server.

Not using a router to connect to the internet we can't.. a proxy IP only seems to work on your pc's IP address, and the world only see's my routers one..

Not that I've tried it or anything *looks innocent*

Okay...

Well, if someone else decides to join up from my university and they use a computer in the library, or in the hall of residence computer labs, or in the general computer labs, or my office (lol) then they will get blocked - because I joined up first - right?

and of course the same would go for internet cafe's.

or other universities if i get authorisation to use a computer there (in a library or wherever) like for a conference or something - right?

not that i think you check which computer i'm accessing from every single time i post...

but just in case you did...

sorry not a cloak (thats for something else)
but i think you get what i mean.

personally...

i think this sounds fairly crazy.

i do get that you are trying to stop blocked posters (or not blocked posters i suppose) from posting under multiple names

but i'm not sure this is the best way to go about it.
