Hit and Run

Posted by Toph on January 6, 2005, at 18:29:34

I am sure that in some cases posters are satified with the responses that they receive and feel no reason to respond. But I get suspicious of the intent of someone who posts a provocative post which is subsequently reponded to by others in a serious fashion. Then the originator of the thread makes no acknowledgment or reaction to the responses, as if their intent was merely to observe the reaction and not to genuinely seek support or start a dialogue. While it is certainly within one's right to do this, does this bother anyone else?

Hadn't noticed. Maybe they intended to stay but something came up?

Because of that possibility I wouldn't cite examples.

Sorta like the "troll" version of a one hit wonder? Yes, I've seen this too.

Tho, sometimes it can happen innocently cuz we may fergit about something we posted. I wish there was a way to view "everything I posted". I post on a few different sites and fergit what I say where. Like right now I fergit where I put my coffee. Which sight? Livingroom? Kitchen? Babble Social board? I dunno.

Near the top of the page there is:

'Find posts specifically for you' and then there is a button with your name on it.

That will show you all the posts that have been directed to you in the subject heading. It won't bring up ones where people don't direct the subject heading to you, even if they are responding to a thread that you started, but it can be a useful way to check.

he he you are funny :-)

Actually I just had a play with that (never used it before) and it seems to become fixated on the first post on the board that has been directed to you. Doesn't want to know about the other ones. Maybe not so helpful after all.

I meant posts which *I* posted...not ones posted to me. When you get over 40, you start forgetting these things. Just wait.

Yeah ok. You could ask to be notified to any follow ups to your post. If the thread takes off then you may be inundated with emails though.

Yeah, I believe you. It is just funny to me now :-)

Toph,

What you describe I've seen, of a truth. Posters that don't wait around for an answer and never really posed a question.

Good observation.

Do you have a "find again" option?

Try searching for "poster:TofuEmmy". There are also other options and examples at:

Google thinks emmy didn't post anything here in 2005. I'm pretty sure she did. Google doesn't even know where my coffee is, and by now it's prolly cold.

Yes, I've noticed this over the years. It seems to crop up from time to time. I am bothered by this as in some situations I see it as the agenda to be to incite and it feels to me like being "used". That being said, agendas here or on forums about any subject can never be fully realized.

Google isn't perfect. For one thing, it may take some time to learn about new pages...
