Dr. Bob...in regards to blocks

Posted by ace on November 10, 2003, at 20:56:21

Dr. Bob,

Is it possible that maybe once a person recieves a block that after a certain time their slate is 'cleaned' as it were? So they start again from a fresh start.

For instance if someone gets a block I know you double it (if they had a pervious one). But say after 6 months maybe if you 'clear their slate' so they start again and get 1 week block if uncivil. Analogous to this is where after a year or so a persons points on their drivers liscence are restored (assuming they had a traffic offense whcih caused them to loose points).

Tell me what you think.

Thanks again,
Ace.

Hey Ace,
I like that idea.

Ace,
I second that notion (especially since the "one-time blanket amnesty notion went over like a concrete canoe). And I love the drivers license analogy.

I'm open to considering some sort of system, but shouldn't how long their previous block was make a difference?

Good point, yes it should make a difference.

Dr. Bob, don't you sort of do this on a subjective basis anyway? I thought the rule was that you *could* block twice (or three times) the previous block, but that you didn't *have* to. I have often seen you act on the side of mercy, and reissue PBC's without blocks at all (even after previous blocks) or block for one week even if there had been a previous block.

P.S. In case I wasn't clear, this is one form of subjectivity that I don't disapprove of, since it is open in its nature, and always errs on the side of mercy. I've never seen you give longer than allowed blocks.

Yes, but maybe being more systematic would be an improvement?

I'm not sure. Maybe you could give even more weight to whether there had been previous probations. So that it wasn't a totally clean slate.
