Dear Dr. Bob,

2 questions...

1. Have you ever considered having a format where it shows how many times a certain thread has been viewed?

2. Also, what about search where you can search for posts by a certain poster?

Thanks,
Ace.

I have wanted to search for posts by a specific poster, also.

Then page down. You can do that, but I think it might be part of the search function that is limited to a certain date range???

I don't think I have... Would that change which posts you read?

Yes, Psycho-Babble Search searches only older posts. But you can do something similar with Google Search by including, for example, "posted by ace" as a search term.

The problem is, Dr. Bob, that works only if someone replies to the poster. I've run into problems trying to find posts I've made, for example, when the topic at hand has been addressed before. Google searches fail if I use Larry Hoover as a search term because the "posted by" part is not part of the message itself. Only if someone replies to me (thereby causing the "posted by" part to appear within the message body), and quotes relevant portions of my post (i.e. with the same terms as those I'm trying to search), will I find the relevant thread.

Lar

P.S. Light-bulb moment. Maybe I should use Lar as a search term?

Psycho-Babble Search searches (by default) only the message body, but Google Search searches the whole page...

Well, I can't explain it then. All I know is that I find myself unable to find my own posts again. I don't like to reinvent the wheel, when instead, I can just give a URL.

I think your own posts are in there, they're just mixed in with replies. Still, it does make it harder to find what you want...

Let's try this. I've added the poster and the thread number to the bottom of each post. Once they get into the Google database, it should be a lot easier to search with them as criteria.

I'll use words that I know were part of my message, and I'll get Google telling me that there are no pages matching my search terms.

Can you give me an example?

I don't recall an example right now, but I'll let you know if it happens again.

Dr Bob,
I found that shortly after the discussion on here about search engines (around 17th October) that the google search engine no longer worked effectively on this site.
Before then, if anything, I was concerned that a search on google usually brought up a no of posts prominently from this board on the first page. As you say, it's how many, including me, found this board.
Since then the posts from this board do not seem to come up as prominently.
What Lar has found, I also did, as I had previously been searching very effectively on poster's names and topics..like tumeric (for example) and reading thru the back pages of this board for topics that interferes me in this method.
I found since a few days ago, I could no longer do so. In fact, I couldn't even find my own posts or links I had used within my posts without tediously going through each thread also.
It helps when people ask for links and it was so acessible before.
I suspect it is a problem with the google search engine. I'd be tempted to bet they changed something in their software recently? Hope it is fixed soon if ths is the problem.

Sorry, I'm a little confused. One issue is that we may be referring to different kinds of Google searches. The usual Google search is when you go to the Google home page:

http://www.google.com

and do a search. But when I refer to "Google Search" as opposed to "Psycho-Babble Search", I mean the built-in links right here.

Searching from the Google home page searches the whole web. Using "Google Search" here searches only dr-bob.org (unless you select "www").

Are you saying that PB used to show up higher when you searched from the Google home page for "tumeric"? It still shows up high when you search from there for "Effexor" or "Lexapro"...

Or are you saying that using Google Search here doesn't turn up as many posts as it should? When I put in "tumeric", I get "about 77" posts, did it used to turn up more?

Yes, that's what I mean. I'll recall specific words I myself used, and rather than do the research all over again (e.g. finding abstracts or links), or writing out the same ideas again, I'll go and see if I can find the link to my prior posts. Sometimes I can't find them, and I'm very good at keyword searches.

Maybe let me know the next time that happens?

Google isn't perfect, it may just be that... Doing a search directly on the server, there are exactly 60 posts that contain "tumeric", 51 on PB (all in 2002), 1 on PSB, 5 on PB Alternative, and 3 here (not including this one). Going through the Google Search results, there were exactly 52 matches, 44 posts on PB, 5 posts on PB Alternative, 2 main pages, and 1 PB post in Italian.

Google also asked me, "Did you mean: turmeric". :-)

Bob

PS: Thanks for all the research you do for everyone!
