Das Baby:
Your defense of Hannah is admirable. It was insensitive
of me to mention "the Hannah festivities" and I apologize for that. However, if it makes her, or you, feel better to know that I hurt myself - well, that says more about you than I could ever say.Possibly you did not have a chance to scroll back through the postings for the month...if you had, it would be difficult not to notice that Hannah was a great cause of dissention from her very first appearance. She was offended by a letter that Greg wrote purely in jest; among other things, she objected to the term "ladies" (horrors!). Coral replied with a generous and eloquent letter explaining how this humorous role-playing was a treasured escape from a sometimes painful life; Hannah took offense to this
("I guess I should just be a good little lump...").
Her next 3 or 4 posts went on to protest the verbal abuse of women, and while this is certainly a serious subject, it simply wasn't relevant. However, it never occurred to Hannah that her constant references to abuse and links to websites for abused women were starting to become insulting to the other female PSB members, who were obviously not smart enough to realize that they were being abused. At this point, I attempted to keep things light by posting, "Someone needs a hug!". Hannah took offense at this. Then Shar wrote Hannah "welcoming her to Lumptonia", as she was obviously feeling left out, but this also offended Hannah. Coral wrote another letter, explaining that she was an abuse survivor and anything but the whipped dog that Hannah was making us out to be. Shar went one better and called herself a "raging
feminist". (I am hardly a swooning debutante myself-I was an AD army sergeant for years.)Somehow, Hannah was still offended. Many members were distressed when Greg quit posting to the board, which offended Hannah. Finally Mark picked up the gauntlet and tried to discuss the abuse issue in a civil way, but that also offended Hannah. When Todd commented on Mark's post, Hannah took offense at that too. On November 19th, Coral sent Hannah a (((hug))). Hannah was offended.
By now, we were all getting a little tired of this nonsense...we were explaining and apologizing for nearly every post...finally, BDay told Hannah that she had a "very large brain". That really pissed her off.
She replied that she hated PSB and Dr. Bob was evil (I mean, where did THAT come from?)Further polite posts to Hannah only made her more furious.Every member of PSB went out of their way to get along with Hannah and she resisted almost all attempts to make her feel welcome and wanted. Instead she spent her time here running around like Don Quixote, slashing and stabbing at invisible enemies on all sides.
Enough was enough.

Thanks for the apology and the summary. I see now (finally) that she must've been the "vocal minority" referred to before.
Some people enjoy being disruptive. One of the downsides of this community being open is that it's also vulnerable. I'd like to beef up the security, but it's going to take some time.
Until then, I think it's best if provocative posts (and emails) aren't responded to. I'll do my best to draw the line, and warn and block people if they cross it.
Not all provocation is deliberate, but it's all disruptive and therefore problematic.
OK, how about we move on now? :-)

That's not what I meant, just the opposite. I meant that it was easy to understand why you were hurting someone else because you were in such pain yourself. I'm truly sorry if you misinterpreted my intent. I'm very sorry you have had a hard time. I was astonished at your interpretaion of Hannah's stay here and I am also sorry for all the pain that interpretaion brought you.
I really am trying to stop posting here. I forgive you for calling me Das Baby and insinuating that I was rejoicing in your pain and I apologize if my forgiveness offends you. I agree with Dr Bob it's time to move on. Good luck.

I said it was time to move on.

I don't think it's civil to accuse someone of insinuation. I'm going to block you, which I guess will be OK since you're trying to stop posting, anyway.

Dr. Bob: I'd like to echo the expressions of gratitude voiced by Nikki and Noa. PB means a great deal to me and I certainly don't want fuel fires and risk being silenced. BUT I have a great deal of trouble discerning the difference between posts that appear to provoke you into blocking someone and posts that don't seem to bother you at all. I was very upset over your decision to block Hannah, particularly at a time when she seemed to be in such distress, although having read the reactions of some of those that she targeted, I guess it may have been justified. However, I think Dasypodidae has made every attempt to defend her and those in similar circumstances in a way that I have found to be civil and restrained. I thought Gracie did more than insinuate that Dasypodidae might take some pleasure in her hurt, and I think anyone would have trouble not responding to that. All in all I thought his (or her) response was pretty diplomatic. Also, Dasypodidae is hardly alone in expressing the desire or aspiration to stop or cut back on posting. I'm sure he didn't mean to give up the choice to decide when or how best to do this. Occasionally (and mostly lately) I can read the posts here and feel like I come from a different planet. Do you have a standard of civility in mind that I'm simply not understanding? Maybe you could be clearer about this. ksvtksvt

PSB did seem like it was turning into a different planet, but that's another discussion. :-)
When I have a problem with a post, I do try to explain why, but it's bound to be at least somewhat subjective. And maybe inconsistent: when the discussion's more heated, my tolerance may be lower. Thanks for your patience,
Bob
