Bio/neuro feedback as augmentation to treatment?

Posted by SLS on July 7, 2022, at 7:06:48

I suspect that neurofeedback can help to entrain one to suppress negative or counterproductive thought and encourage positve and constructive thoughts.

Although neurofeedback might not act as a reliable monotherapy, it should give other treatments a better chance of working. At the very least, it will help suppress those thoughts and feelings that generate the perpetual the circular reinforcement of brain dysfunction. Maybe this will drive investigations to define the role that brain tissue stimulation. Perhaps TMS, MST, VNS, ECT, and other somatic *and* psychological treatments should be considered treatment augmentation rather than monotherapy.

Generally speaking, too much fast brain wave activity on the right side and/or too much slow activity on the left side causes or greatly exacerbates depression and anxiety. Neurofeedback helps to bring these brain waves into balance.

You're correct about neurofeedback not being a reliable monotherapy, in many cases. But even when neurofeedback doesn't suffice on its own, it frequently allows people to significantly reduce their medication dosages.

Peter Van Deusen, one of neurofeedback's leading trainers of other clinicians, describes his approach in this podcast:

Perhaps not so surprising:

rTMS

1. Left Hemisphere High Frequency = Improves Depression.
2. Left Hemisphere Low Frequency = Worsens Depression.
3. Right Hemisphere High Frequency = Worsens Depression.
4. Right Hemisphere Low Frequency = Improves Depression / Triggers Mania.
