MAOI for Teenager

Posted by maoi_wowee on November 16, 2020, at 13:47:52

My 14 year old daughter is currently taking Prozac, Wellbutrin, lamictal and adderal predominantly for depression and attention issues. Shes still not doing too well.

Any thoughts/experience on someone her age taking an MAOI? After 15+ years on nearly every antidepressant med in existence, I have in the past decade or so been on Parnate (with a shorter go at Nardil as well).

While Ive sunk back into a depressive hole over the past year or so, I still have never found a class of medications as effective as the MAOIs

My daughters psychiatrist has basically shot down the idea of trying an MAOI for my daughter....and Im not sure what to do now or how strongly I should push to try her on an MAOI.

Its frustrating to see her embarking on what looks like a similar miserable path as I was on of having to go through all of these other marginally effective (at best) meds without at least giving an MAOI a shot.

What do you all think?

*I should note here too that she is not my biological daughter so we dont necessarily have a worked for me, so it will work for her situation.

How many different meds and classes of meds has she tried? Even I, a Nardil taker, would not suggest trying an MAOI until a few other types of meds have been tried. She's really young and MAOIs can have a lot of side effects. The diet restrictions aren't as strict as the labels say, but I have had hypertensive issues myself with certain foods/ingredients (thankfully bp went down by itself) and I am careful. If the doctor refuses outright to prescribe MAOIs to anyone, that is poor medical education, pharma brainwashing, and borderline malpractice. But there might be good reasons to hold off on prescribing to a 14 y.o....I hope she gets better!
