Valium for muscle relaxation

Posted by Leroy Brown on May 23, 2013, at 13:51:51

My Doctor just prescribed me 10 mg. of Valium twice a day for my very tense neck. I can't seem to relax the muscles in my neck on my own, my neck is so tense my head shakes, what do you guys think of her choice (Valium)? I've tried many other muscle relaxants without any relief.

I've taken Valium and found it to be a very good muscle relaxant, but Valium and other benzos can be a double-edged sword. While Valium was very relaxing and I was sleeping nine hours a night on it (normally I'm an insomniac), it made my depression worse. With long-term benzo use (over two weeks) there's the danger of tolerance and withdrawal symptoms once you stop taking it. Because of its very long half-life, Valium is easier to taper than other benzos. About one-third of people who take benzos long-term will have serious withdrawal symptoms when they stop taking them. (I was one of those.) The good news is that two-thirds of people either have only mild withdrawal symptoms or no withdrawal symptoms. EMG biofeedback or EEG biofeedback (neurofeedback) might be a better and safer solution for your tense muscles.

Taken valium for over 40 years and have stopped and stated the dose easily. I feel l0mg is a good choice. Soma also is a muscle relaxant? Phillipa

yea.....soma is good for muscle relax....meprobamate, used a long time ago for alternative to the barbiturates for anxiety..... Ativan is also a muscle relaxant but not as strong, 2mg made me limp and loose, but I don't think its as strong as Valium, like everytime I think of Ativan I always relate it to psycahitric medication, but when I hear valium....always think anxiety pill, not psych medicine...lol

but anyways, yea valium right now sounds good for this case....
