I don't think it is actually "antipsychiatry". I see it more as someone taking a step back and examining the whole situation.

To quote a song by John Mayer, "when they own the information they can bend it all they want."

Honestly I quickly skimmed the article and thought it was against antipsychiatry which is pretty much how I feel.

I found it a discussion of whether people felt psychiatric diagnosis was real or not and that pdocs really had no physical proof that they are indeed real. Where as in as the used oncology a cell is placed on a glass plate and examined under a microscope to see if abnormal cells are present. Also comments on whether meds were necessary or not or if society had changed from close knit families to what we seem to have now families spread apart, working parents both no Mother home to tend the children. This last part if mine. Phillipa

I think psychiatric meds can help severe problems. You can control hallucinations, agitation, mania, sometimes help severe depression, sedate severe anxiety away...
...but I don't think you necessarily need a shrink to do it. 1% of the population will be affected by schizophrenia. .5% bipolar I. A somewhat larger percentage psychotic depression. How many shrinks do we need, if we restrict treatment to the severely ill?
Dr.Szasz--may he RIP--made some good points about psychiatry. Then again, he also made his living as a psychoanalyst and critic of psychiatry. For me, as a patient, I'd much rather see a family doc than a shrink any day of the week.

I have found that most family doctors, forneurotic spectrum disorders atleast, tend to give you the standard dose ofan SSRI, if that doesnt work, they double it, if that doesnt work, they're lost
Benzodiazepines are a dirty work, and combining antidepressants is herasy

Jono here I don't even see a family doc or internist as if you ask for a script for anything to do with MI they say "oh I don't do that". You need to see a pdoc. Even endo said same. They play "pass the buck" Phillipa

My GP is in the top 10 in Texas. He is a great guy. I told him one time as he was leaving the exam room that I loved him, he turned around and said I love you too Phil. He's the kind of person that you would feel comfortable saying that to. Well, me anyway. He's been my doctor for 20 years but, I wouldn't want him prescribing psych meds and I don't know if he would.
Shrinks have a lot of training but it doesn't always mean they are good doctors but I've always gone with them. But we all have our own ideas for getting the best treatment. That's what makes the world go round. Either way as we all know, the meds can't do it all. If we eat saltwater taffy three times a day, never exercise, isolate, watch porn, we will never get well. But enough about my routine.

That article is a complete mess, there's just no gettling around it. Though one (out of a dozen other sloppily organized) idea brought up is the consequences of categorizing disorders according to an everyday nomenclature ("anxiety", "depression" are terms the non-neurotic can identify with, and which lead them to think they have the capacity to empathize the higher extremes from which the neurotic suffers.) Why not bring back the older, slightly less colloquial pre 20th century terms like melancholia and hysteria, that more greatly impede subjective identification?
