I once was given wellbutrin and reacted with what the pdoc thought was hypomania. But it seems in real life the only three people doing really well and for years are taking wellbutrin. One has bipolar she says and is over 60 and is truly sooo functional, one an older guy who is more than functional, and other works in holistic pet store. Why wellbutrin and not the others? And if can take if bipolar why did it cause hypomania in me even with benzos? And with the new warnings on celexa sounds like the SSRI's are headed in same direction as TCA's? So maybe my next door neighbor when she refused to take another ad and just xanax was right. She also is truly functioning very normally lots of energy also. It's getting confusing to know what one should do? Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,
I too have heard that wellbutrin causes less mood instability in bipolar people; however I guess everyone is different and you just have to see how it affects you. I am bipolar and for me even a low dose caused too much activation and "mixed states" this past fall. I felt so much better when I stopped, and I started having a lot of "anti-medication"-related thoughts as a result. But now I'm more "anti-ad" and am taking trileptal which has helped some. --Oliver

Adding Abilify and Lamictal might help. It is worth looking into. I believe both drugs give dopamine a boost, but the risk of mania is reduced compared to taking a more traditional antidepressant.

If you have anxiety spectrum illnesses like PTSD and OCD you will probably not like wellbutrin.
I can tolerate small doses but they dont help the depression anymore, only raise anxiety. =(

Yes OCD and anxiety always. I wonder if stopping the small dose of luvox and lexapro and just taking the valium and xanax at night might be best for me? Phillipa

Hard to say.. for my hyperarousal and anxiety topamax worked best. for the irritability, high dose lexapro worked good also.
If you were going to try wellbutrin I would do it really slowly.. I can only tolerate 150mg these days.

No wellbutrin as the one time was enough. It just seems strange to me that those I know in real life are happy and appear normal and function highly. Has to be a reason why this and not something else. Phillipa
