I like the following. I thought this is what they had in mind:THE BIPOLAR SPECTRUM
BIPOLAR I: Both mania and major depression
BIPOLAR II: Major depression and hypomania
BIPOLAR III: Cyclothymia. Mild depression and hypomania
BIPOLAR IV: Depression and usually no mania. Mania may be triggered by some antidepressants.
BIPOLAR V: Depression and no mania. Some blood relatives have had mania
BIPOLAR VI: Mania and no depressionThe only things missing are NOS and substance abuse.

Medical is missing also but how can a medical condition cause bipolar? I read the second link also on nursing newsletter. From what I read it's all the DSM kind of still being revised. And if docs and the government are cutting down on prescribing meds for conditions with more categories wouldn't that mean more prescriptions written? Phillipa

I guess we will have to wait and see what medical conditions qualify.
Regarding substance abuse, I have seen people become bipolar-like with mixed states after detoxification and during abstinence - particularly with alcohol.

Really that is interesting. I'm betting that thyroid becomes one of the medical conditions as I saw it so often when worked inpatient. And when went that is when true problems started. Phillipa

The whole spectrum concept makes much more sense than these separate categories. I thought that's the direction they'd go in.
But then, these are the people who were going to make grief into a pathology.
