Akathisia is not like OCD or GAD.

Akathisia is a type of intense physical restlessness which is normally caused by antipsychotics, but other drugs can be involved. In akathisia, patients are distressed by the horrible sensation of not being able to stay still for even a short time.

Patients with anxiety may be physically restless due to their anxiety, but the restlessness is less severe and is not the primary problem. They are not distressed because they are restless, they are restless because their anxiety is distressing.

Ed thanks when watching the man didn't seem that distressed. There must be degrees of it. So in a way the opposite of anxiety. I'd always thought antipsychotics also but they mentioned SSRI's also. PJx

Akathisia is a DRUG INDUCED state of restlessness and anxiety that can be treated with beta blockers, cogentin, etc. OCD is not drug induced.

Eric google just akathesia and watch the short video. I'm surprised this was posted as it could potentially scare a number of people. Phillipa

Physical restlessness and pacing where the patient does not appear distressed is called pseudo-akathisia or sometimes hyperkinesia. True akathisia is very distressing.

But no, akathisia is not the opposite of anxiety, it's just different. Patients suffering akathisia often feel very anxious and agitated.

I feel it was a poor video of akathesia. PJx
