Benzos for social phobia?

Posted by Ben on August 6, 2011, at 7:02:41

I am BP II and have also social phobia. The problem is that no one of my meds help the social phobia. My pdoc suggest to take benzos. Whats you experience? I take Parnate 50mg/day, Lithium, Lamictal and Valproate. I tried nearly all SSRIs, Venlafaxine, Duloxetine, Clomipramine... for social phobia.

Benzos are pretty standard for social phobia. Klonopin is especially popular, usually around 2mgs/day.

I tried Klonopin around 0.5mg a day (3 days) but it made me feel tired with problems of reaction to things. Does these effects last on or do I get rid off them if I take Klonopin for some days or weeks?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the reactions to things, but my first reaction was 'got it in one'.

There are real problems with benzos for SP. The vagueness in particular in social interactions is actually anxiogenic. So you need more, or at least I often feel like that.

I have impaired recognition and a lag of reaction to things if you know what I mean.

I decided to give the Klonopin a trial and start with a low dose like 0.25 mg.

Exactly.

I have a problem remembering names quickly enough.

And that is just the most obvious form it takes.

As I mentioned I`m on Parnate as well as on mood stabilizers. Did you make the experience that Parnate makes you more nervous due to its stimulating properties? So that could be bad for social anxiety?

I never gave Parnate a real go. I took low doses (10 or at the most 20) for a while, and that was OK, but I could see that insomnia would be a big problem, and I didn't know how to handle that, my benzo tolerance being what it is and given my dislike of most of the other alternatives.

One day I took Parnate with SAMe and that was awful....I ended up hiding in a library behind some newspapers.

So I don't know.

Hi. It takes time for the slowing down from benzos to go away. If your on an antidepressant then get back on Klonopin. It zaps my SA away where I can even (currently) go up to woman and ask them out! Thats major success for me!!!
I take 4mg/day and started on 1.5mg. When I doubled from 1.5 (after 6 months-ish) to 3-4mg was when it hit home. I cannot do without it yet the great thing, and also unique thing about Klonopin is that, and this applies mainly to SA, its not addictive in the more-ish sense at all once u hit YOUR dose. The one thats right for you. 2mg? Might help for short term 'calmness' but Klonopins a bit like an antidepressant when it comes to social anxiety. It takes time and you cant just start high and wait. It needs carefull building up untill the side effects are tolerable. Its worth it in the end. My doc even said I can go up to 6mg if i ever need to temporarily. Nuff said.
