Took a neighbor for maintenance ECT today

Posted by Zonked on July 29, 2011, at 19:23:29

I've gotten to know one of my neighbors, and took him to get his maintenance ECT today. So strange. He emerged with nothing more than a headache. And it seems to do him good. I do notice, however, that he forgets what he has told me all the time. I wish this procedure was perfected 1000 times over... if I had those kind of memory problems there's no way I could ever hope to return to work. And they pre-dated today's treatment. apparently though, it works well enough for him to want to continue living but at the expense of short term memory problems. I hope there are folks in labs going to work every day to get us better treatments for depression. My worthless post for the day.

Memory doesn't return later on? I was told that it does? But never had it and wouldn't. Saw it performed once and couldn't handle the young guy under anesthesia urinating all over himself. Then he was wheeled back to his room and didn't know a thing. Phillipa

The memory starts to return around the time that depression returns, or, I should say, vice versa.

The memory is only for like two weeks prior to the treatment, and honestly, if someone is a good candidate for ETC, what on Earth is there to miss remembering for that period of time? Feeling like ****? =P

I've not had it, but have been in the hospital and witnessed it work miracles with a guy who wore his head down like it was a sagging mailbox someone bent downward with a baseball bat.

I didn't think it was physiologically possible for him to hold his head up, much less smile-- and yet ECT helped him do both in just a few days.
