Posted by torrid on June 27, 2011, at 22:16:53

looking at what musle relaxors are covered and I want to hit it right on the first try, my choices are,

soma
chlorzoxazone
roboxin
orphenadrine
tizanidine

I'm trying to be brave but I'm having a hard time taking this pain

I'm going to ask the doc for tizanidine, is that a good choice?

Hey Torrid,

Tizanidine was very, very tolerable, but I am not sure if it would be enough in your situation or not. It is pretty subtle, not a knockout, how it works. It might work it's best taken over days, even weeks. This isn't scientific info, but my experience plus that it is often prescribed for ongoing spacicty.

I haven't tried the others. Flexeril (is that one of the ones you named) was too hard on me.

Oh, you said 'are covered'. By insurance?

Well then, have you read up on soma? It is interesting in that it breaks down somehow into some metabolite thing of Miltown. So wouldn't that put it in the benzo category beside Valium?

Good luck with this. Hang in there.

Not sure either of how the soma works took a half once and had nightmares so didn't take anymore. I did a lot of googling on the miltown thing and don't understand or remember how it worked. So sorry you're in pain. Phillipa

I'm on flexiril and it doesn't help, have used soma but I don't remember if it worked, I think it didn't work. I figured out it's TMJ that's causing all this pain. head, neck and shoulder pain, jaw pain, blood serum in my ear, my teeth arn't linning up. It's all from teeth clenching anxiety.

Hmm. I am sorry torrid :-/

Can you read up a bit? On the soma? Because it is different than flexeril. And you have someone watching for contraindications? Sorry I still don't know the others you mentioned.

I think the tiazadine is more a maintenance medication. This is just homespun pharmaceutical advice. It might help with long term tension.

You can stand the flexeril? I didn't really find it super helpful, even apart from my sensitive to sides issues. So it's helping, but you need something short term?

'Flector' patches help reduce pain. They are a transdermal nsaid. It could help as a multi-pronged approach to back pain. If you could wear a patch on your back
just below the neck. Sometimes treating the pain however which way will help the body unclench.

Flector costs a million dollars without insurance. There is a prescription gel called Voltaran that I have rubbed on my neck and face. It is the same nsaid as
the patch, but costs about $36 dollars a tube w/o insurance coverage where I am.

I have taken the same nsaid orally to no effect. Diclofenac.

Wikipedia had a good entry on soma, if I recall.

Heres an original idea - tellt he doctor what is wrong, and see whzt he recomends, might be tinanzidine, might be a different muscle relaxant, might be somthing else. If you're in pain, an analgesic would seem to be indicated, muscle relaxants are only mild painkillers, roughly equivalent to ibuprofen etc. Maybe a stronger pain releiver sucgh as Tylenol 3, Vicodin or somthuing, with an antiinflamatory and perhaps a muscle relaxer would help? Physical therapy might also be of benifit

If the pain is all from teeth clenching anxiety, wouldn't it make sense to try and anti-anxiety agent, like xanax, in combination with some kind of body-work, like meditation training?

Depending on what antidepressants you're on, LA tramadol can be very helpful, as it lasts 12-24 hours...... it breaks that cycle of being in pain, taking a pill, waiting an hour for the pill to work, feeling ok for a few hours, then waiting till 6 hours is up, again in pain, to take another pill.

It generaly shouldnt be used with SSRI antidepressants though.
