Looking to Start Insomnia Support Site

Posted by EastC on February 21, 2011, at 0:45:52

Anyone that reads any of my previous posts knows that I have been living with chronic insomnia for a long time - I have been through so many different types of medications and treatment modalities that I thought it appropriate to start a website for chronic insomnia sufferers that is separate from sleepnet.com - perhaps a site that has a primary focus on chronic insomnia and its medication-based treatments. I need to think of a good non-profit domain name and get a group of fellow sufferers to join me in this effort. Anyone that has to live with the frustrations of this disorder knows how crippling it is to every aspect of life and how hard it is to find the proper treatment from any professional who is willing to listen and understand. This is just an initial proposal to see what people think of the idea.

I have been living with chronic insomnia for the past 10 years and have been on a majority of the medications that are on the market in addition to more exotic and hard-to-get treatments along with combinations of treatments - this is a global problem which hasn't been taken seriously enough and it deserves just as much attention and support as depression/bi-polar disorder/etc. For me personally, I know this to be a biological problem and not a lifestyle one. One of the catalysts for this idea was reading the book 'Insomniac' by Gayle Greene which directly mirrors my experiences with chronic insomnia. Please sound off below.

Hi East C,

Unfortunately, one of my lingering problems from going off of psych meds is insomnia. Even when I get enough sleep, it is at strange hours and it doesn't feel restorative.

Would your site cover all types of solutions or just meds only? Thanks to lack of sleep, I wasn't clear.

No matter what causes it, insomnia stinks to high heaven.

I will check that book out. Thanks.

I am open to making it about all forms of insomnia if need be. I wanted something that gets more attention than what is already available on the web.

That would be great.

By the way, I looked up the insomnia book by Gayle Greene. I am definitely going to buy it as she sounds like she gets the issues.

Thank you for mentioning that.

"Insomniac"

It looks good.

I am quite sure that there is a physiological underpinning of my insomnia.

You may find more ideas to help you with biological sleep issues / insomnia on the Psychobabble alternatives link:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/alter/ and also this link chock-full of info http://itsnotmental.blogspot.com/2009/01/sleep-timing-of-melatonin-light-dark.html

An Integrative medical doctor helped with our family member's profound sleep problem. Yes, including the non-restorative sleep, although you may need a sleep study to rule out things like sleep apnea.

In fact, there is no way my family member could have gotten off the psych med without the Integrative medical specialist suggesting a simple amino acid supplement, but that post from the itsnotmental blogspot pretty much covers it all.

Thanks, what a great site.

Unfortunately, melatonin previously caused a severe depression so I am reluctant to try it again. But maybe I will pick a night where I have nothing going on the next day and see what happens.

I find it interesting that they suggest taking it 5 hours before bedtime. A psychiatrist not in my area who seems quite knowledgeable has his patients taking it at sundown which is a similar type strategy.

I am glad to hear it.

I don't think I have sleep apnea because when I fell asleep at a social gathering of sympathetic folks, no one said I snored or seemed like I was gasping for breath.

Interesting.

By the way, I noticed that the website mentioned that some kids who were diagnosed with a mental illness might have first had sleep issues which could have caused the MI problems. I wonder how many kids have these issues who are being misdiagnosed like this?

I also wonder how many kids with autism or on the autistic spectrum are misdiagnosed as having Bipolar disorder?

Anyway, I have bookmarked the site for more reading.

Thanks again for suggesting it.
