Should I switch from Klonopin to Diazepam?

Posted by Laney on January 31, 2011, at 10:56:54

It sounds like Klonopin and benzos like it can cause depression in itself. Should I do a crossover to Diazepam? I mean that's what they suggest on a site about withdrawing from it anyway. I would just want to do the crossover.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Laney

Hi Laney in the past I just did cross overs. As a matter of fact I'm now in the process of switching totally back to valium from a combo of xanax and valium. And it is the longest half-life of the benzos. Klonopin depressed me but others do very well on it. If it's worked for you this long I'm not sure it would be contributing to depression. What's your personal discription of depression? As I feel we all have different feelings about what it is. And for each different. Phillipa

Hi P,

My personal description of depression is feeling sad or low. Not being interested in things that I used to be interested in, (that's a big sign for me). Not waking up ready or excited to tackle the day. I could probably go on and on. It all started when I tried tapering off of paxil. It was an emotional roller coaster ride from hell and well, the depressive side of that episode just kinda hung around.

Also, I have low thyroid and adrenal issues but don't want to go the conventional route because I feel doctors don't know how to address it correctly. But in order for me to get to the bottom of those issues costs money out of pocket that I don't have right now.

Thanks for listening,
Laney

I hope you were referring to clonazapam, Phillipa,
Valium has a bit shorter half life, and in my experience does not cause such a dramatic "out of touch" with reality effect - forgetfulness is common with such meds, depression as well (feeling loss of interest in things).

"Clonazepam has an unusually long half-life of 1850 hours, making it generally considered to be among the long-acting benzodiazepines. ..." But it seemed like next day I would already feel disoriented if I would skip the dose of klonopin.
While diazepam, seems to be more smooth, not so vicious. And remember, coming off these meds, can very difficult. Consider the cons and pros - my main con is memory and overall just avoiding things - for example, I used to have social anxiety - I would take clonazapam and feel depressed and really care less about going out or socializing. And then when you come off, the hypersensitivity to everything strikes. It takes at least 2-4 months (for me at least) for the feeling of just wanting to hide goes away.

Half life for klonopin above should have been written as 18 to 50 hours. Not 1850. When are we going to see "edit the post" function on here? Perhaps not such a good idea for those like me - i would keep on editing the post all night. LOL>
