The ONLY thing I hate about MAOIs

Posted by Maxime on October 5, 2010, at 18:33:52

I can easily get around the restrictions because my diet is restricted anyway. BUT the one thing I can't handle is that when I get sick I can't take cold remedies. I am so sick right now... fever, block up nose etc. I would love to be able to take a Neo Citron and crawl into bed.

What are you allowed to take? I don't know. Phillipa

Nothing but Tylenol to keep down the fever. But I can't take ANYTHING with a decongestant because it would lead to a hypertensive crisis. One time I took some Tylenol cold medication and it gave me the WORST hypertensive crisis. It was when I had first started the med in 2002. I wasn't paying attention to what I was buying ... I just wanted to function.

No nasal spray that's my savior with a cold. Phillipa

How about a prescription nasal spray like flonase? That's what my pdoc gave me for colds when I couldn't breathe through my nose. They're steroidal, so you should use them sparingly, as they can, if you use them a lot over time, break down your nasal capillaries. But they're fine for short term use for a cold.

Wow! That is an excellent idea! I have used Flonase before and it was very effective. I wonder if my psych would prescribe it for me or if he would want to see my GP?

Thank you for the suggestion. I never would have thought of that!

Tonight I will have to do the Vicks thing, but it's so greasy. Blah.

I had no problem taking Benedryl with Parnate. My dose was 40mg qid.
I understand your frustration and I sympathize with you. (Is that correct? Perhaps I should say empathize)
In any case MAOI food restrictions are overly elaborate, just be cautious and keep Nifedepine on hand.

Actually it is very easy for me to deal with diatary restrictins. I am vegetarian and I find that helps. I can eat a little bit of strong cheddar with no ill effects.

I am just SO congested and my whole body aches, I have a fever which I treat with Tylenol. I guess it's another Vicks night for me tonight.

Oh well, at least I can always drink tea with honey. :) It's so comforting!

I ended up using a nasal spray decongestant and it worked and I had no ill effects from it. Now I know that I can use them in the future with colds. Yay!

Which one did you use Maxie? Avoid anything with ephedrine or phenylephrine.

Ed, I used Otrivin. The print is small on the bottle that I don't know what is in it. Maybe I should look at the box in the pharmacy.

Ooooh

I just checked Otrivin online and it turns out that it shouldn't be taken with an MAOI. Guess I was lucky. I had no strange reaction and my nasal passages were clear enough breathe.

I don't understand how something that is not ingested could be dangerous to take with an MAOI.

Enters blood vessels. Try normal saline you know that is safe. Phillipa

I didn't know that.

Plain saline would not have provided me with any relief. I have tried it in the past. If I get another cold I will use Otrivin. It's such a small, small dose and I was able to breathe and then finally sleep.

I hope this is my last illness for a while. It's kicking my butt. Today I have been in bed all day to rest. It does the body good.
