Asenapine stories for depression?

Posted by oceancat on September 26, 2010, at 15:00:47

Hi all,
I would like to hear from people who are taking asenapine (Saphris) for depression or bipolar depression. I just started it (I am also taking Cymbalta) and it is extremely sedating and weakening, to the point where I can only take 5 mg at bedtime, not twice a day. I'm wondering if I should stick with it -- Abilify kept me afloat, but doesn't do any wonders.
Thanks everyone!
Anna

Hi Anna!

I did not like Saphris. I found it too sedating and ineffective as a treatment for my depressive disorder. I found Fanapt less sedating, but it actually made my depression worse. Each individual's psychobiology is unique, and my reactions to a given medication might not match yours. If depression is an issue, Abilify can work very well, although it is perhaps best used as an adjunct to antidepressants. Abilify has its liabilities, though. Some, but not all, people gain weight. It might also raise deleterious serum triglycerides.

Good luck.

Hi Scott. It's actually Anita, from the old Babble days. Thanks for your reply -- if you'd like, please e-mail me personally, I don't have your current e-mail address. Mine's still the latest you have, I think. I hope you are doing well.

The second full day on asenapine was magical, but today, the third, was horrible. So I don't know what to think -- going up to 10 mg at bedtime tonight, see what happens...
