Saw doc yesterday...

Posted by SheilaC on August 3, 2010, at 8:26:35

I saw my stupid Pdoc yesterday and here's what he said. He wants to move incredibly slow because he thinks I have the opposite reactions to meds. (Geodon making me sleepy, low-dose Seroquel making me sleepy, etc.)

The only suggestion he had was to cut the Seroquel back to 25mg at night and keep the 1mg Klonopin and stay with 40mg Geodon during the day along with 10mg Adderall.

I told him how depressed I was and that I really felt I needed an anti-depressant and he said he would have to add a mood stabilizer! I thought Geodon was my mood stabilizer? He also only suggested Wellbutrin, which in the past has made me manic! But he insists that next time we will add Wellbutrin. I asked him about Pristiq, which I took and it didn't bother my bladder like most of the SSRIs and SNRIs do and he said no, it would cause too many sexual problems and weight gain.

He wants me to use exercise as my anti-depressant (which is hard to do when I have no energy and am depressed!).

Ugh. He is really frustrating.

Hey. The seroquel dosage reduction might help, although it seems a bit odd to even bother with using seroquel at such a tiny dose. It seems like he could give you something else, but, hey--I'm not an MD.

He doesn't seem to be listening to you. You have opposite reactions to meds? Ummm...right. That's like the time a shrink told me I was only stupid on Seroquel b/c I had cognitive problems to begin with. I switched drugs and found out my "pre-existing cognitive problems" were, in fact, seroquel-induced. Shrinks love to blame the patient before they blame the pills, its crazy like that.

Have you considered a new doctor? A lot of shrinks really aren't that great anyway, but it seems like you might be able to find someone a bit better than this guy.

Good luck.

(>Geodon making me sleepy, low-dose Seroquel >making me sleepy, etc.)

How is this the opposite reaction? Most people taking low dose seroquel are very sedated.

Seems like you've been on a *lot* of meds with many side effects but not too much relief.

Have you considered trying any complementary treatments?

I'm sorry your pdoc is such a moron and is frustrating you. Is there any chance that you could get a new pdoc? I don't know what else say except I feel your frustration.

I think I understand as same happens when I take meds either nothing or the opposite I guess paradoxical reaction. But seroquel sedated me so bad at 50mg that I almost fainted was in a hospital setting so the med was discontinued. I'd love alternative treatments. Phillipa

Would you be open minded to trying some things for energy? Here is a list of things that come to mind and may be good adjuncts to your pharmaceutical treatment.

Schisandra-Planetary Herbals Schisandra Adrenal Complex

Holy Basil-New Chapters or GAIA

Rhodiola-New Chapters(I prefer), Mind Body and Spirit, or GAIA

Ashwagandha-Sensoril or Himalaya Herbs

Eleuthero-Not sure which brand is best, haven't tried yet but heard great things about it. I bet GAIA or Planetary Herbals makes one.

Are you taking a good fish oil supplement? I think fish oil can help medications work better through simply making you brain function better.

I thin exercise would be tremendously helpful. But, I do agree that if you don't feel well, exercise will not only be hard to do, but will unlikely give you the same benefit even if you force yourself to do it.

Good points. I also believe that complimentary treatments along with better medications may be very helpful.

I've been through the gammot of medications. I just came to a point where I needed to wake up and smell the roses. There are no perfect medications, they all have side effects. They don't work perfectly. Their effects often wane.

You either get used to it, or continue living in a fairy tale world where this magical concoction of meds will take all one's problems away.

Assess the tool for what it is. Each med has its benefits and limitations. Then make the choice as to whether you want to take it or not.

Don't complain about what the med *should* be or what it *should* do. We all know what the meds should do.

Have you tried Selegiline? Or St. John's Wort?

Sorry to interrupt, but I'd like to redirect follow-ups regarding complementary or alternative treatments to Psycho-Babble Alternative. Here's a link:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/alter/20100703/msgs/957335.html

Please do feel free to continue this discussion there, and in general to explore the other boards here.

That will be considered a new thread, however, so if you'd like to be notified by email of follow-ups to it, you'll need to request that there. Thanks,

Bob

Hi Sheila,

I am glad you are able to advocate for yourself. And I'm glad this new doc seems to listen.

Someone mentioned Lithobid..I agree, if you can afford it, it may be easier going as far as side effects go.

Thank you very much--this is exactly how I am feeling in reading these boards. There is no magic pill! They all come with some side effects--weigh the pros and the cons and consider what you might feel like without them. You have to work hard too--a pill is not going to give you what you aren't willing to work for.

Hey great post and I agree the magic pill so far isn't there. Work hard in combination with your choices. Phillipa
