I was wondering if anyone has used ambien instead of xanax for social anxiety. I have used xanax for years and I love the way it helps, but it's never really made me pro-social.Once, while I was out of town I was running out of xanax, so I called my doctor to ask if I could take an ambien, and if it would work. He said I could, but he thought it would knock me out. I would rather be knocked out than have severe anxiety, so I was fine with that. The ambien made me a little dizzy at first, but then my mood increased and I wanted to be social. It reminded me of xanax with pro-social properties that didn't affect my memory as badly either(I know ambien can cause the same thing). I have now been taking them occasionally and they still work great, and I am pro-social like a normal person and not like some wasted drunk just being obnoxious and annoying.
I think I like it better than Xanax and that has always been the med I needed most. Has anyone else ever had a similar experience, either good or bad?
I don't have time to go a search to see if this has been posted before, so I hope not. I am really interested in hearing about people who use Ambien during the day. I'm so tired right now I can't hold my head up lol(And I didn't take an Ambien lol). I will see you guys tomorrow and reply if needed. Take Care.

In reply to Ambien or Xanax for SAD?, posted by Sammy Jar on June 22, 2010, at 4:54:27
I'd recommend a mixture of Xanax and either Wellbutrin or Paxil. Works great for me!
Of course the BEST thing to take for SAD is Xyrem (sodum oxybate--aka GHB). It makes you feel better within seconds and all social fears simply melt away like ice.
Problem is that, during Bush I, Pappy Bush and Quayle were (are) some of the largest private holders of EliLilly stock (parent company of Dista, makers of Prozac). Since this was the "time of Prozac" they realized they'd have to make up some serious stories against the only anti-d that REALLY and truly worked, GHB, else people would be buying an anti-d that worked in seconds instead of weeks that cost about $.005 per dose to make. Lilly would lose it all.
So, these gentlemen got the FDA and DEA to immediately perform a totally unnecessary "emergency ban" of this miracle drug (used safely in France and Italy for 60 years without ONE death, BTW) as it could be used for "date rape"--assuming the girl you were trying to slip it to wouldn't notice her drink tasting like undrinkable seawater. Even the most wasted ones did of course, but the media still perpetuate the lie... Then they lied to hell and back about how River Phoenix died! Hint: check the autopsy report--its public. G did not kill him.
The other interesting thing is that it (GHB) literally STOPPED the aging process. People still think I am 5-10 years younger than I am, and MRIs confirm that my inner organs are the organs of someone 28-30, not 40 years old.
Now a great medicine that WORKS is only available to narcoleptic people only at (ready?) $1080 PER 180ml BOTTLE. I used to make 2 liters of it for about $2. So 180ml would cost me about $.16/.18 to make. What thieves!
The US Government and this ridiculous and unwinnable prohibition is sooo sad. Unfortunately, too may piggies, prison guards, prisons, cop car makers, donut shops, etc, etc, etc ad infinitum would go under if they ended their phony "war" tomorrow!
Peace and good luck,
DocRon

For whatever reasons, the so-called "go to" tranquilizers for social phobia are now ativan and klonopin. This could change--psychiatric prescribing practices seem to be affected by trends more than science--but...that's how it is right now: longer lasting, high-potency benzos. Xanax is high-potency; as long as you only do it as-needed, I'd go with that over Ambien...Ambien really is designed for sleep, not anxiety. I've had some ambien experiences where I found it to be pro-social and relaxing, but...you're better off, I think, taking a low-dose benzo before social events. I would think you'd definitely rather be on a little bit of xanax than a full dose of Ambien when you had to do things like drive or hold long conversations with people.
Good luck.
