I have been reading that benzodiazapines are the treatment of choice for catatonia. Why would this work?

I really don't know, but...Catatonia is characterized by muscle rigidity or other motoric disturbances. I don't know if muscle relaxation is helpful or not. However, there is disinhibition, which may allow for increased release of dopamine in motor areas.

Per Wiki. Surprised but said benzos or ECT and not antipsychotics. Phillipa

I think that's about it. The relaxation and disinhibition.

Works due to disinhibitation, I've seen that happen, although doesn't seem like it would at first thought. Nothing to lose as usually done as a last resort before ECT.

Probably for the same reasons opiates would.

IV Ativan is given because it relaxes the CNS and limbic system. Esp. with NMS, which can be life threatening.
