What dosing schedule did you arrive at? All at night in a single dose? A split dose of once in the beginning of the day and once at night?
The literature actually suggests dividing the dose into 3 times a day, which I think is not really that common.

Lots of doctors prescribe it as a single dose at night. I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes. I guess if you find nortriptyline sedating, you might do best as a single h.s. dose.

I take 50mg before bed. Works fine that way.

Apparently the generic version is CR so it lasts the whole day. When do the benefits kick in? I tried it for a few days and I just slept all the time and didn't feel calm.

I took either 10 or 25mg at bedtime and it was sedating the first few days I was on it. It worked really well for my panic attacks, mild depression and generalised anxiety. It has a long half-life (I think 78 hours, but I could be mistaken).
