Melatonin with Parnate? Is it ok

Posted by kirbyw on January 16, 2010, at 13:49:24

In a previous thread I referred to my problem of Parnate related insomnia. I just spoke to a friend who recommended I try Melatonin half hour before bedtime. I checked on Wikipedia and found no indication that there are any dangerous effects of using melatonin with Parnate but wanted to double check on this list.
Thanks
Rick

I don't see any direct contraindications.

However:

MAO metabolises melatonin as in addition to monoamines. This means that melatonin could (theoretically) have a longer half life and possibly greater biological activity when coadministerd with an MAOI

Melatonin potentiates the effects of the 5-ht1a receptor. This means that 5-ht1a receptor mediated effects could be increased following melatonin.

For instance, serotonergic side effects could be greatly increased with melatonin. Especially watch out for things like shivering.

While melatonin may work for regular insomnia, it may just not work for parnate related insomnia. I have a hunch that it may sort of work, but leave you feeling icky the next day.

I've been taking it for about two weeks now and I have suffered no ill effects and it has helped with sleep.

agree you may just have more problems with fatigue. in fact i'd suggest to be extra sure to get lots of bright full spectrum light all day on an maoi.

"Melatonin potentiates the effects of the 5-ht1a receptor. This means that 5-ht1a receptor mediated effects could be increased following melatonin.
"

do you have the cite for this, thanks?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12121481

i got shivering when i was on paroxetine. i take it as a sign that someone is very neurologically ill for the long haul.

recall that 5-ht1a is also a very important autoreceptor, autoreceptor sensitisation may be important in some cases. a case of a woman responding to melatonin at 3mg and buspirone 5mg where everything else has failed has prompted me to prepare for a trial of buspirone + melatonin (75mg to hopefully speed up response/resensitisation). i hope it works. i conceptualise my issues as some complex of hyperserotonergic and/or hypodopaminergic and/or hypogabaergic........ hell.
