Vyvanse Crash?

Posted by SheilaC on January 14, 2010, at 11:47:41

After 15 days on Vyvanse, I feel terrible. I felt great the first week or so. I didn't feel manic, just really energetic. I cleaned the garaged, worked out, got organized - but didn't sleep well.

Now, after 15 days, I feel spacey, no energy, tiny pupils, sick, sometimes swollen hands and feels like my thyroid is swollen.

Have I crashed? I'm beginning to think that these ADD meds are not good. I feel like I have the flu.

All I want to do is sleep.

Have I developed a tolerance and need to up the dose?

Maybe I do not have ADD or ADHD, which is why this med is making me feel this way? Maybe I initially got the "speedy" feeling and now I have crashed.

What do you think?

I don't know anything about that med, but it seems like it might not be a bad idea to call your doctor.

Definitely call your doc? Thyroid swollen do you have thyroid disease? Sometimes a thyroid also can get inflammed and if it becomes hyper it's can become a what's called a thyroid storm? It does sound like this med isn't for you? Please call the doc? Phillipa

I was on vyvanse for a while than I built up a tolerance and stopped it. Some build up a quick tolerance to stims. It's a shame as the work so well for a while.

Ask If you can transfer to adderall xr, or dexedrine.

Yes Vyvanse does have a crash..yet it's not as noticable as dexedrine or adderall would be, it wear's off slow....very slow.

To me the spansules are the best because you know when it's going to wear off..which is about 6 hour's for 1 spansule. Vyvannse has been said it lasts up to 12 hours, yet with me it only lasted 7.

What dose are you taking?

I started with 20mg. Worked fine for 3 weeks (except I couldn't sleep). Now I feel awful.

I had the same kinds of issues with Adderall (immediate release). The first couple of weeks are like a "honeymoon" phase. I felt great at first but then started having all kinds of issues and side effects. I still take it today, but I take it more responsibly and my body is more used to the drug now.

I tried Vyvanse on a free trial and I absolutely hated it!! It's a "pro-drug" version of Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine), and it's basically just a "patent extender." It's just dexedrine that has to be metabolized by the liver. That's it. Nothing more. Vyvanse is just modified, regular old dexedrine that can't be crushed up and snorted. It's actually quite ridiculous when you think about it because this crushing and snorting issue isn't really an issue for most people. Dexedrine was first synthesized in 1887!! Can you believe that? Even Adderall is mostly just dexedrine, but it's a combination of 4 different "salts." It's still about 75% dextroamphetamine, but they added "levoamphetamine" which is just a slightly different form (mirror image) that produces a slightly different effect in the brain. Again, they took a very old drug and supposedly "enhanced" it. It makes it work a little faster and gives you more of a "kick in the pants." For a lot of people, this is just increased nervousness.

For me, Vyvanse was just an extended release crash. It worked for a few hours and then I felt the "crash" for a lot longer than I would with anything else. That's just me though. As another poster mentioned, you're probably better off taking the much, much cheaper generic dexedrine or the Dexedrine Spansules which are the extended release version, still much cheaper than Vyvanse.

After I started the Adderall, the "high" went away. I thought this meant that it wasn't working, so I took more. I eventually realized that I was chasing the "high" without even realizing it. After maybe the first couple weeks, you don't necessarily need to "feel" it in order for it to be working.

I don't think your experience is abnormal. You might've been on too high of a dose and/or your body just doesn't agree with this version of the drug. If I were you, I'd ask to try the Dexedrine Spansules. There's a good chance that the crash won't be dragged out for so long. Plus, you won't be wasting money, whether it's yours or your insurance company's.

The only reason Vyvanse would be a good choice for you is if you have a history of drug abuse and you are likely to try to crush and snort a stimulant. Even then, many former drug abusers are able to take their ADHD meds responsibly.

What's good that can help this is taking Omega 3 fish oil, and some brain supplement's you can get at the healthfood store, just ask where the location is. Another is not taking it on the weekends because that gives the brain a time to "repolerize" back to normal and not be under the stress of stimulantion daily, because in my case it wore me out.

Does the Vyvanse come on slowly? I rerember it used to that...it took about an hour to completly take effect. Dexedrine Spanusles usally worked within 20min of ingestion.

I'm wondering if the Vyvanse is effecting my estrogen and synthroid? I am in menopause (due to hysterectomy).

I wonder if Vyvanse makes me burn through the estrogen (because I feel hot all the time).

Also - I wonder if the Vyvanse if effecting my Synthroid? My thyroid felt swollen.

Plus - why are my pupils tiny?

I feel awful.

Sheila, please call your doctor. Vyvanse may or may not be part of the problem, but you have a medical issue that goes beyond the "run of the mill" side effects that people talk about on this board.

You told the prescriber about the Synthroid, right? Is he/ she a family doctor or psychiatrist?
