Wellbutrin dosage

Posted by X-ray on January 1, 2010, at 7:55:00

Hi,

I'm happy with ny new combo of Wellbutrin XL (150 mg) and Remeron (45 mg),
but I'm not sure about the dosages.

I don't know whether I'm still depressed, but I have financial problems.
There is no medication for that.

However, the optimal dosages of these drugs might help me to focus and work hard.

Should I increase the dose of Wellbutrin XL from 150 mg to 300 mg?

I would appreciate all comments.

Best regards,
X-ray

I'm on the same two drugs, along with Paxil. You certainly can increase the Wellbutrin if you want to. Some signs that you are on too much WB would be excessive stimulation, agitation, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, or lack of appetite. Remeron affects some of the same neurotransmitters, so there may be a synergistic effect that requires you to lower your dose of WB. I'm currently bouncing between 150, which often seems like too little, and 300, which seems to affect my sleep. If you feel that you are still having residual symptoms of depression, a reasonable plan would be to try increasing the WB and see how it goes. Or you could add another drug, such as an SSRI.

I want to add that Wellbutrin is a pretty good drug if you want to increase your focus and work harder. It's basically a milder version of ritalin or amphetamine. Note that it has a moderate tendency to affect your decision-making at first, since it can make you "irrationally exuberant," to borrow a phrase from Alan Greenspan.

Guess that's why it increased my anxiety even on benzos. I don't get how I could have been acting kind of hypomanic? Isn't this a med for mania? Phillipa

I have financial problems too and you are right, there is nothing to make the stress of them go away. It wouldn't hurt to increase the dosage of Wellbutrin to see if you feel better on that dosage. You can always go back down to 150 mg if you feel the same on 300mg or worse.

Now that I am feeling well, I find that I deal with stress better. My life stressors haven't gone away, but I am not as anxious over them as I was in the past when I was a wreck.

Good luck!

If I were you I'd stay on the current dosage for at least 4 weeks to get a good idea of how well the current dosage is working. By themselves and in combos meds can have therapeutic windows, which means a higher or lower dose is not effective. I'd be really cautious changing doses if something is working for you.

There are two approaches you could take. You could start low and work your way up, or you could start high and work your way down if you have side effects. I guess I'm more inclined to err on the side of overtreatment rather than undertreatment, as long as it's a safe dose.

To Phillipa, Maxime, hyperfocus, mtdewcmu

Thanks for all replies!

I'm doing okay on 150 mg of Wellbutrin,
but I might try 300 mg of this drug.

I could go back to 150 mg from one day to another,
if 300 mg will prove to be too high a dose.

But deep down I feel that 150 mg of Wellbutrin
and 45 mg of Remeron is the right combo for me.

Best regards,
X-ray

XRay, Are you taking this combo for depression? Does the remeron make you sleepy? Does the WB counteract this effect?

Thanks!

Laney
