Nortriptyline SEs :(

Posted by Sunbath on August 28, 2009, at 11:40:41

Hi, it would be really nice if someone could share knowledge with me about nortriptyline's dosing and side effects..

I'm now at day 8.. started with 25mg, 3 days later 50mg, and yesterday I upped the dose to 75mg.

Dry mouth is bad since the beginning but it's tolerable..

Sleep has improved a tiny bit, but daytime fatigue, brainfog + anxiety increased a bit.. will this subside with time or is that already a bad sign (wrong med for me)?

Today when I tried to do my ~1hour run which I do 2-3 times a week, I noticed that my heartrate was unusually high (about 20bpm higher than normal) and so I had to stop since it went up to 170 very soon..
That's really frustrating, I now recognized that my restng heartrate is ~110bpm where it's used to be around 80bpm..

Did I up the dose too fast? What intervals would you suggest?

How good is the chance that these SEs will subside with time (how long will it take approx.)?

Thanks a lot!

thank you Philippa,
but I wanted to know whether I titrated up too fast and whether those side effects (foggy mind, slightly increased anxiety and tachycardia) will usually go away..
also when should the sleep improving effects fully kick in?If it does make me a bit agitated, maybe this will never happen?
thanks!

Wrong med or not enough time?ditch it?

slept very poorly today..

also feel much more depressed since I started taking it..
sorry for all those questions, I just don't know if I should try to sit it out, if it's normal in the beginning (been 8 days now), or if it's a bad sign and it's been the wrong choice for me..

Never took any TCA before except amitriptyline which worked great for sleep but I only tried it a few days because of fear of the excessive weight gain which is quite likely..

I thought of nortriptyline as a lighter, slightly more activating version of it without too much weight gain and SEs, which I should have tried before amitriptyline, and hoped it would still improve sleep a bit.. that's not happening yet though.

Thank you and sorry for the extra messages.. I always forget something and/or miss to point out what I mean..

When I started nortriptyline the first time, I started off right away at 75 mg with no ill effects. How did you feel at 25mg and 50mg? You can always lower the dosage again if you feel that the side effects are too much. Maybe you titrated up too quickly for your body. I really think you should give more time as a trial. You don't want to quit it before something good happens. I hope you start to feel better soon.

Hi Maxime, thank you very much for posting!
As I remember I already felt kinda sick on 25mg.. I couldn't stand it anymore and switched it for 20mg amitriptyline 2 days ago.. maybe that was too early, but this already feels so much better.. I'm excited of what it will be like in a few weeks and I really hope that I won't gain too much weight.

Thnx again for posting!
Good luck with your upcoming parnate trial! Keeping my fingers crossed!!!
