Grapefruit Juice and MAOI's

Posted by FrequentFryer on July 18, 2009, at 5:15:00

Would Grapefruit Juice interact with MAOI's like Phenelzine (Nardil) or Tranylcipromine (Parnate) in a good or bad way... Or not at all?

And how much Grapefruit juice do you need to enhance Xanax 700ml?.. The more the better I guess how much time should I post ingest the grapefruit juice before the Xanax

Regards

Dont know the tech specs, but grapejuice has a potntietating ezyme like the drug tagmet that works on certain drugs, and yess maois would be one.

You can google the two terms to zero in more on the specifics.Id just avoid the two.

goggle drug checker and add the two meds. All side effects including grapefruit juice should pop up. Phillipa

I am not sure of a way to predict how much grapefruit juice someone would need to affect xanax levels. Someone with chemistry expertise could probably figure something out. But even then, liver stuff varies widely from person to person. For example in a study when zoloft was added to nortriptyline in a group of people their blood levels of nort were increased by a very small percentage near zero to a very large percentage almost near 100%. I don't recall the exact numbers but it was quite a spread, showcasing how we all metabolize stuff differently.

Grapefruit juice does most of its liver influence on drugs if they are taken at the same time. It primarily affects the first pass metabolism. For example if you took Parnate or Nardil at 7am, and then had a glass of grapefruit juice at 11am, there would be hardly any effect.

I am not a pro on this particular topic but that is how I understand it.
