I've thought the same exact thing. But when i ran it past my pdoc she said no because ativan [benzodiazapines] are depressants and without an AD would throw me into a deep depression. It makes sense. Best wishes.

I went for about 30 years on benzos alone dose varied with life events didn't touch an ad til thyroid went. I have been reading and such a strong connection they go together. The book I started reading said so many undiagnosed thryroid disease dispite testing. So I say yes . But then we are all different. Love Phillipa

Hi Maniac,
In my experience of treating myself w/ just xanax for awhile, well, I think it messed me up more--for me that was mood swings and depression. So, I guess I never *stabilized* on it.
Also to consider--for many what worked years ago no longer works when we return to it.
two cents worth

Xanax is the only benzo I've been on long-term that doesn't seem to exacerbate my depression. Even when I wasn't on Stablon I wasn't depressed. Now I am on Stablon again because the house I am living in doesn't have enough windows, so it is very dark.
Bright sunny days keep my depression away.
I'm thinking of trying an SSRI though. I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not. My pdoc suggested Cipralex (escitalopram) in addition to Xanax (and taper off Stablon).
I had a brain zap tapering on Stablon, but no other significant withdrawal phenomena.
Sorry for going off topic...
