Is there a med for without sex side affects?

Posted by newo38 on June 14, 2009, at 14:00:54

Is there a medication for depression/anxiety that does NOT cause sexual side-effects? The few I know of are: remeron (you'll gain 30 pounds) Serzone( liver failure black box warning) wellbutrin ( I may try but it's activating and when I took it before I got hives and had to stop). I don;t want to take lamictil because it is like using a howitzer to shoot a fly.

Many of the TCA's are devoid of (or have less pronounced) sexual side effects. This is with the exception of clomipramine.

Agomelatine (It may damage your liver but should not cause it to fail.)

The TCA's are older medications. They are as (if not more) effective as newer SSRI's. They have side effects of their own but in many ways are different from the profile of SSRI's.

Depending on the TCA, they can be more activating or sedating or somewhere in between.

The main side effect is potentially elevated blood pressure and or heart rate at the higer doses. Certain TCA's are more likely to do this than the others.

In generally they do not cause pronounced sexual dysfunction - at least it is reported much less than with the SSRI's.

Parnate for me was very pro-sexual.

I didn't have any sexual side effects from imipramine, doxepin, trazadone, or desipramine. As usual YMMV.

Apparently Savella (Milnacipran) doesn't have sexual sides.

It's new to USA and not approved for depression (although in other countries it has been used that way for years). I'm considering trying it myself.

Pristiq is not supposed to have sexual side effects for women. I have not found that to be the case. For me it's just like any other SSRI- deadening.

Any drug can cause sexual problems, including ones that are not supposed to. It varies widely from person to person. Me, I can take the pro-sexual drugs Wellbutrin or Deprenyl and competely lose my sex life.

Some meds are more prone to cause sexual side effects. Most notably the SSRIs.

TCAs are less likely to cause problems. But as stated, any do have the potential.

Parnate seems sex friendly. Even for me, which was astounding.

I have a little experience with the new med Savella. While internet hype says it does not have any sexual side effects, I know of one person who did, and myself I noticed maybe a tiny bit of drop in libido. Nothing like the SSRIs though.

St Johns Wort. This herb really can work about as often as meds do. Clinical brands such as Kira or Perika are most reliable. Sexual side effects are rare.

I was on Serzone for a few months and found that it decreased libido only slightly, increased ability, and did cause a noticeable amount of anorgasmia similar to SSRIs, but not nearly as bad as SSRIs.

Of the SSRIs, the most sex-friendly to me was Prozac, with Lexapro taking second place. Relatively speaking of course, as SSRIs go. There were definitely some sexual side effects, just not over-the-top disastrous. The others were pretty bad on sex, especially Paxil. Paxil was devastating to the bedroom.

We can try to pick and choose the ones most favorable for sex. But the true test is to actually try it and see. These meds are not completely predictable.
