Generic Prozac?

Posted by Cseagraves on May 16, 2009, at 17:30:13

Has anyone here who has taken Prozac tell a difference between the generic or real stuff?

Thanks,

Courtney

I've mostly taken generic in liquid form and it's always worked really well.

I guess capsules might be another story though, as they might not break down or absorb as well as the branded ones.

I also like the liquid as it's great for weaning and making small dosage changes.

Boy wish when I tried in when first out it had come in liquid as the 20mg gave me panic attacks in three days took three days of xanax to feel like myself as wasn't depressed at all then. Phillipa

brand naming probably has a placebo effect too. not saying this is the only possible factor, just one to keep in mind.

I felt that generic and name brand fluoxetine are pretty much the same.

I think the liquid version is problem-free.

Capsules, different story. You can't feel the difference right away, but if someone has been stable on brand Prozac for months and then switched without their knowledge to generic, it is very common to see them deteriorate within a few weeks. My doctor will not even prescribe generic versions of Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Gabapentin, Lamictal, or Klonopin because he has seen how problematic they are so many times that it is almost predictable.

He has however discovered generic versions of two pain meds where the generic actually gives his patients better pain control than the brand.

There is no evidence on it. But my doctor wants his patients to have the best opportunity to get well. So he insists on brand, simply because his own eyes have seen it enough to know there is something to it.

Generic prozac and brand prozac felt the same to me in the short run. It took about 4 weeks to feel there was quite a difference in favor of brand. At the time, I did not know I had been switched.
