is it almost for sure that ssris do poop out or are here successful longterm ssri users? I often see posts about mao and benzo but I would like to know if people taking ssris are still there.

It sometimes looks that way if you were to gauge the answer to your question by what we observe in the population who post on Psycho-Babble. My guess is that it is precisely because those people who have failed to continue to respond to SSRIs are attracted here in such large numbers. In other words, I think that it is possible that more people continue to respond than fail to continue to respond to SSRIs in the general population. I suspect, though, that the SSRIs do have a greater liability for losing their effectiveness than the older drugs and the SNRIs.
You might consider combining a SSRI with desipramine or nortriptyline; both of which are tricyclic antidepressants (TCA). I am not sure, but I would bet that doing so could yield a more robust therapeutic response and help protect against "poop-out".

I correspond with one lady who has been on lexapro for over four years with no poop out so far. I know irl some people also that the meds don't poop out. some of them just go off them. As don't need them anymore. Phillipa

Personally no, not with escitalopram.
It's got these robust qualities that i didn't see with fluoxetine. I have only been off it once for 6 months, worked the same as before.

I agree with SLS. That is, in the general population outside pbabble, when ssris work good they can do so for a long time. At sites where patients rate their meds, a common timeframe seems to be in the 3 to 5 year range, and some are still on their meds doing well 10 years later.
Also in agreement with SLS, I believe adding a TCA to an SSRI can enhance the overall efficacy and give it an indefinite timeframe.
When poopout does happen, I sometimes think it has nothing to with the meds themselves, but rather something else in the biochemistry has changed...aging, time, hidden disease or infectious organisms, oxidation damage from poor diets, and such.
Just a hunch, but I think two of the best things we can do to prevent poopout are to change the way we live...
1. Eat the healthiest meals and snacks in town, very low on sugars, high in raw veggies and fruits, modest amounts of proteins, limited caffeine. And lots of purified water.
2. I think over time our livers change when having to churn up these meds all the time. To prevent that, I think it is a good idea that all medication users take daily Milk Thistle extract to keep the liver steady, healthy, and flowing. It is kind of like a mood stabilizer for our detox system.
2. At least 3 or 4 times a week, get some kind of exercise for an hour or so that is a real workout...heart pumping, breathing hard, etc. Work up to it slowly and gradually.
3. Regular sleep/wake cycles. Having a job that requires you do rotating shifts messing up the body clock is fine for someone young and healthy, but a disaster in the making for most of us.
This is the end of the thread.
