I have bipolar depression and OCD. As I've written before, I've been through an extraordinary number of meds over about 15 years of active treatment.
Recently, I was put on Cytomel 50mcg to augment Parnate and Xanax. My thyroid tests have always been within proper limits, and I basically don't understand what Cytomel will do for me. Does anyone have experience with this?
Thanks.

Greywolf very complicated to me. Larry Hoover could answer it just like that. But it's used to boost an ad. Quick acting with short halflife I think and was explained to me as like coffee. Google it lots of sites as have googled it myself the thyroid loop is complicated. Mary Shoman is reliable. Phillipa

I took Cytomel to augment some AD cocktail. It is a thyroid hormone and I found it to be a great stimulant and mood brightener. Trouble was that it shut down my own thryoid and eventually, some months, it pooped out. I think it increases T3 specifically.

often people have 'normal' thyroid levels that aren't optimal, and improving them helps with mood (and caardiovascular disease, etc)
i think the main effect is sensitizing neurones to noradrenaline

Hi Greywolf! Can you tell me if your PDoc was the prescriber of cytomel? I have hypothyroidism and I need treatment for it, but have no health insurance. So I've been seeing a PDoc pretty much as my sole health care provider.
And did you lose weight when you first started taking it? I've been eating better and exercising, but haven't lost more than 5 lbs of my SSRI weight gain, which happened over the past 3 years when on mainly Zoloft. I'm concerned about long-term effects of hypothyroidism; was tested by an endocronologist at the beginning of the year, but never went back for treatment.
I also wonder if some of my mental health symptoms would go away if I get treated, but I don't feel I have a choice to get the appropriate medical care right now.
Thanks :)

Garnet if you do have hypothyroidism you need treatment it's not something that can be ignored. That's dangerous. Yes psych symtoms can improve on proper thyroid meds chosen by the doctor. Phillipa

> Thanks :)i forgot/didn't know about this. yeah, hypothyroidism can cause lethargy, blah, depression, etc.
as far as weight, it can help, tho keep in mind it will also stimulate appetite as well as metabolism.
hypothyroid can also cause increased LDL and Lp(a) ('cholesterol')
def. get this treated. probably make things like amp more effective too. i'd think pdoc might have experience with it, its a long-recognized augment for depression, although sometimes docotrs just don't use certain treatments.

> GreywolfI think people who need T3 to argument their meds are proably undiagnosed hypothyroid patients. Otherwhise they wouldn't have to add extra t3.
