Can I get Abilify in the UK?

Posted by hamish on January 7, 2003, at 16:14:13

Does anyone know whether Abilify is available in the UK? I've been taking quite a high dose of Amisulpride for Schizophrenia for about 4 months now - It deals well with my voices but I get quite tired and unmotivated. I was on a much lower dose for a year without it helping with my symptoms at all. Finding the website and taking part like this has been a revelation - I think you are well ahead of us with treatment in the USA - seems like more self-empowerment. Abilify was recommended by a friend of mine who took part in some trials
I'd welcome any feedback - Hamish

An older NICE clinical guideline says the atypical antipsychotics they could offer were amisulpride, olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone or zotepine (Abilify is aripiprazole).

The guideline which replaced that one, CG82, doesn't seem to specify which atypical AP's they can use.

However, the good news is it appears that aripiprazole has been licensed for treating schizophrenia in the UK since 2004:

were you thinking of trying abilify or amisulpride as a dopaminergic?

No, I somehow stumbled upon Hamish's post and looked it up out of interest as I've been researching some NICE guidelines myself.

I've just realised that the original post is from several decades ago d/r, hence your confusion!

As a side note, they won't prescribe atypical AP's for depression/BP in the UK as they don't believe there's enough evidence for their efficacy.
