To anyone,
I've been taking 5-htp for about five days now. Would there be a problem if I wanted to start on Marplan? Would I need to wait a couple of days?
Pdoc started me out on Marplan at 10 mgs a day the first time I tried it. Had a bad reaction. He wants to try starting me out at 5 mgs a day. I was thinking more like 2.5 mgs a day and going up from there.
Any opinions?
Thanks,
CS

lol you can't seem to get rid of me here. I use 5htp a little bit on nardil. it works well at the proper dose to "numb" the mood, so to speak. I combine it, when i use it, with a tiny bit of tyrosine in the morning then the 5htp at night. Any overstimulation you get from tyrosine will be blocked by 5htp. Just be careful of 5htp...high doses will give you tinnitus, racing heart, sweating, headache, insomnia (although you will feel sleepy)...makes you feel worn down in a way. Tiny doses of augments when you play with maois to start.

Myco,
You're great!
Just wanted to make sure there wouldn't be any interactions with the 5-htp, which I will stop taking if I go back on Marplan. I think I read somewhere not to mix with an maoi, not sure.
Since you don't get Marplan where you are, I was going to mention that another reason I chose it was that its supposed to be the easiest(or mildest) of the three maoi's. (Parnate, marplan, and Nardil). I really appreciate the time you took to talk to me today. It helped alot.
Thought I could do this on my own because I'm pretty stubborn that way, but maybe not right now. I swear I have never felt this hopeless about life before.
Thanks for the shoulder.

One last time tonight Courtney,
Don't fear the 5htp in tiny doses with maois but yes technically, if you read up on it, it's not supposed to be taken with maois...but pdoc's know better than to heed these warnings in all cases. Moderation is ok when under proper doctor supervision.
I've heard also that marplan is the easiest of the "classic" maois...although, I only know of one person who has had success with it (on here)...but I suspect that has more to do with the fact that it is rarely prescribed and he just happened to be one of those rareites. I'm also on a site called www.patientslikeme.com Courtney...there is a guy there who is marplan and keeps a daily/weekly journal of his experiences on it. You may consider signing up for the sight (it's totally free) and corresponding with him.
Also, not sure you are aware of this...there are 2 other maois...both of which are even "easier" on the body and head than nardil, parnate or marplan. One is called "selegiline" (also in patch form called "emsam") and the other is called "moclobemide"...both of these maois are "less efficacious" (don't work aswell) depending on who you talk to. I dont necessarily believe this though...moclobemide is in wide and successful use in scandanavia...I think it would depend on how you define efficacious. Both of these maois work very well when you combine them with augments...5htp is a very good augment for selegiline (which only works on dopamine and PEA - i think) so the 5htp will give you the seratonin boost. And moclobemide augments well with tiny bit of lithium which makes it much better. Moclobemide works very fast also and gets out of your system in 2 days (not 2 weeks)...this med, in combo with another, is on my list of tries if nardil fails me in the future. Don't feel like you are totally limited in choice of maois...we are all different and what doesnt work for him/her may for you...ie don't forget about these two 'less mentioned', but nonetheless usefull to some people, maois if you want additional options. Moclobemide was also going to be a choice for me if I went the herbal/supplement route for anx/dep. I like the fact that with moclobemide and selegiline you can eat what you want..."at small doses"...at higher doses no.
